I built http://www.rexxindustrialparts.com at the end of last year. a reasonable amount of people come to my site considering I have no marketing budget for the site. Unfortunately I have seen a great deal more abandoned shopping carts than I have completed sales. My actual sales % is well below the 3% average that is supposedly the norm. I would appreciate any feedback that could help retain the sale and reduce cart abandonment. As part of my effort to resolve this issue I placed live chat on the site to be able to answer questions in real time for customers but very few people respond to it.

Thank you for your help,

One thing that causes me to abandon shopping carts all the time is not being able to tell the total price of my order without putting things into the shopping cart -- for example having shipping charges calculated, seeing what shipping options are available, knowing whether sales tax will be added, and knowing when the items will be delivered. I also put things in shopping carts on sites if I am comparision shopping among sites. Does your software allow you to identify people who abandon carts specifically? Could you do a simple follow-up with them to determine why they are leaving without a purchase?

Best regards,

Thank you for taking the time to review my site and offer suggestions. I am not able to identify customers that abandon their carts so i can follow up. In reguards to total cost everything is shipped free so that should not be much of an issue.

Check this SuN post - a survey re: abandoned shopping carts.

Look at the top reasons people abandon shopping carts and see if any relate to your site.

Free shipping is a good thing... I didn`t notice it at first on your home page. When I checked a product I noticed the free shipping message.

I`m not familiar with all your products... but how competitive are you on price? One reason people abandon shopping carts is comparison shopping.

Thank you for your helpful suggestions. My pricing is 25-50% below wholesale on everything. I buy out parts rooms for much less than a normal distributor pays so I have the ability to offer the same product for much less.

Maybe say that on your website - with the idea of stopping people from comparison shopping on price.  It obviously won`t stop people, but it may convince some people not to check prices on other site.

For months I said that my prices were below wholesale. I had that statement placed prominently in the top margin. It did not have a positive effect. After a while I decided that too many businesses advertise wholesale and below wholesale prices even if it is not true. I started to feel as though my potential customers were leaving because they lumped me in with the other businesses that are not seen as credible.

For me, during checkout, it was slightly confusing. Sometimes just organizing the information on a page better is enough to drastically decrease bounce/exit/abandon rates.
One thing i see you`re missing is an install of google analytics, that is unless you have your own installed. With google analytics you can setup a checkout "funnel". This will show you what pages are causing people to abandon their carts specically during checkout.
Are you also tracking bounce and exit rates for individual pages? If not, this is one of the most basic things you should be doing for any ecommerce site. Over time this data will show you what pages, in general, have the highest bounce and exit rates. Which can tell you, that there is something wrong with thaqt page. That is how you identify your problem pages, then with that info you apply serial AB or multivariant testing to improve those pages individually.

You also want to check all of your traffic sources (referral sites, search engines...etc) and see where they`re coming from to judge if they`re truly targeted traffic or not. Visitors don`t mean crap if they`re not targeted, a site with 10 targeted visitors could easily sell more than a site that gets 1000 random non-targeted customers. Something to keep in mind when looking at conversion rates.

I have great analytics for my site as well as a live site monitor. I watch it closely but it does not give me an indication as to why people are abandoning carts. As far as the visitors to my website they are very targeted. they primarily come in from organic searches where people are searching specifically for my product by manufacturer and model #.
