This topic was discussed at an entrepreneur face2face meeting and I don`t mind telling you what an eye-opener it was for me.  The consensus amongst those in attendance at that meeting was, YES, running your own business definitely is detrimental to growth. 

Expanding on the topic it was explained that you can not see what needs improvement, revamp, etc. from the inside because you are simply too close to the business and if you`re wrapped up in the day to day operations you won`t have available time to focus on growth.
 
Being brought up to believe you should keep a tight rein, always be very hands on and absolutely run the operations of the business yourself, this info was stunning to me and conflicted with everything I thought I knew.  However, it made sense and caused me to re-examine a lot of things with regard to growth of the business.  What do you think?

Great post.  I think that although you have to a lot of work while running a business delegating and bringing other capable people on even early on is essential.

I personally have been blessed with the ability to see things from the outside of my business and what I have going on. I think also that this skill can be developed while still being in the trenches. 

I try and adhere to the idea of moderation in all things and try no matter how in trenches I am in any given moment of my work.  I try and look at each project and step with a critical eye that is not my own.  One foot in and one foot out of the situation.  Being able to disconnect yourself and total thrash your own idea to make sure that it is pure and ready to be executed is important.  Also, putting yourself in the place of the customer, vendor, employees, etc.. is equally important.  I think it is an important and essential tool that will help you, your business and product be more effective.  If you can`t do it yourself ask or pay others to help you who can.

It is possible to be hands on and delegate, but I think it might be a skill that is acquired through trial and error--like a lot of things. I think it is also human nature to want to always be in control of something that you have created.

Teamwork (or delegation) is essential, however, and it must be realized that your business can only improve once the ideas and work of others is contributed. More will get accomplished working with others as opposed to working alone.
