My website is http://www.greenandchic.com and the blog is http://www.greenandchic.com/blog (I am currently working on my Wordpress theme to get it to look like my site). I don’t have my site professionally optimized at this time, but I was wondering if my Wordpress blog would help with that.  I am able to drive a fair amount of traffic (not very targeted though) to my blog and was wondering if thats enough for my site.  Would I do well to have my site professionally optimized or is WP good enough?

I can only speak from our own experience but I know it has helped us alot. My wordpress blog I purposely made different basically to have some fun with it. One thing that we do is put a link at the bottom of our main page on the website after they have read the text above it. My thoughts are that I want them to see about our product before clicking to go to the blog. I noticed that your link is near the top which might hurt in the long run.

I think of the blog as an extension to the website and gear the articles I write to talk more about the product. One other thing that I think helps is that on my sidebar I have links to our various web pages whether it is our signal flag horizontal banners, vertical banners and also our signal flag valances.

SEO wise it has really paid off having links back and forth and having good keywords. Pictures on the blog with tags really help as well with traffic.

I have had the blog for a little over a year and although it took time to build we are really easy to find in the search engines.

Kathy - Great ideas!  Ill move the blog link on the home page on the site and ill add links and banners to the blog.

Roland - I`m not sure if my outbound links are reciprocal links.  I dont think think they are because my blog is so new.  I`m not sure how to get more inbound links.

There is a link to my website at the top right (banner) but I`m not sure how to make it more visible.  There is also a link in the "about" page.

WordPress is good for SEO in general. For example one seo friendly feature of WordPress is permalinks. Permalinks make it easy for you to have URLs that are more search engine friendly, but you still need to turn permalinks on and there are still decisions about how you want to set up the structure of the URL.

It looks like you`ve already turned the permalinks on too.

If you do little other than to use WordPress you probably are in better shape than if you had someone with no SEO knowledge build you a site. But know that WordPress isn`t a substitute for a marketing strategy or an SEO strategy. Neither are one time things to set up and leave alone. It`s all a process. WordPress will give you a good start on some aspects of SEO, but there`s definitely more to optimizing a site.

Only you can decide if it`s worth hiring someone or whether you want to take the time to optimize your site and blog. You could even ignore SEO completely and still do well.

Have any of you guys heard of Drupal? It`s a CMS like Wordpress and it`s supposed to have really good SEO hooks. I`m tryign to find someone who has used it.
