seo needs time and patience.

I think SEO is a very legitimate service.  There are false ones out there that offer "too good to be true" results, much like diet programs do.  If you're looking for services though, hire one that is reputable and that has had success with real clients.  It may be a little more expensive, but totally worth it.  For example, this Seattle SEO company.

Good SEOs are worth it.  The one's I have worked with are more 'marketing agencies' than just geeks that tweak a web page.

Keep in mind that SEO is just one part of the "Internet Marketing" umbrella.

yes,

many of us do spamming which is wrong and have no use.

many people promises to clients  get high pr within some days and promises to get traffic.

these all are false. and useless.

cos in seo you have to need patience.

no one get immediate results.

I don't believe that SEO is a big scam at all, I think that nothing can be farther from truth. However I do agree with the statements above about SEO requiring time and patience.

You are right Dale there are a lot of SEO snake oil salesman out there. I talked to 5 of them and everyone gave me a different answer to my questions. I read lots of posts now I do my own SEO. You have to be patient though.
