I just attended a Social Media Panel discussion sponsored by the AMA. The Social Media speakers were from Monte Cristo Hotel and Resorts, The Phoenix Suns, and Southwest Airlines. We have all heard that the difference with Marketing / Social Media today is the two-way conversation. So it was interesting to hear how these Social Media / Marketing folks are now talking directly with customers via Facebook and Twitter. They talked about...Read more at http://www.soldlab.com/is-marketing-now-sales/

I think some marketing people are doing what traditionally could be called sales. Are they pushed into it by social media? It probably has a role in it. Over the last five years I have seen a lot of so-called marketing people turned into inside sales. This probably has more to do with the economy, and a company’s desire to make all hands on board revenue producers.Sales in the meantime is slowly being converted to consultancy. Attention is on the prospect’s needs and wants, and sales consultancy having the ability to give expert advice, thereby becoming a trusted advisor.Upper level sales, and the days of selling something to someone who really doesn’t want or need it is over.

The tendency to go into Social Media offers a huge variety of opportunities for people working in sales, no matter what they are selling. It could be all kinds of products, like clothes, luxury watches or tools. That's probably because people keep mixing marketing and sales all the time. In the earlier days, when Social Media didn't exist, sales was a completely different concept and was bound to other criteria.

In my opinion today's marketing is more like sales in a larger scale. You know, salesmen sell through one-on-one conversation while marketing people begin to talk with the public through the social medias. However, there should still be some differences. Let's say that sales is focusing on closing a deal while marketing trying to have the whole customer group educated in some certain way.
