I would like to track how much time is spent on different websites in my company. Point is to discover weather is to much time spent on websites that are not related to work or not. Is there a free software that can be used to monitor internet activity? Does anybody have experience with this issue, what are reactions of employees?

I, personally, have no experience with this issue but I know that you must inform your employees if you want to monitor their internet activity.

This app is free and could be helpful: internet monitor

Share with us reaction of your employees if you implement your plan.

dejmo,

I think you’re asking the wrong question. You could spend a bunch of time and/or money on tracking your employees internet activity, but why? Do you want to work on your business or be the internet hall monitor? Give your employees obtainable goals and hold them responsible for achieving them. In my opinion it's much more productive and easier than trying to monitor your employees every move.

As a manager of a group of freelancers from different parts of the world, I use this time monitoring tool that allows me to track their work hours and at the same time their computer activity.

This makes me aware of what sites they visit and how they actually do their work on their respective computers. More importantly, this method has helped reduce distractions and encouraged productivity.

I believe that should help your company too.

I agree with jstojan . For me, monitoring your employee's internet activity is a waste of time. You should concentrate on more meaningful tasks rather than annoying your employees by checking their every move. Employees of successful companies, like Google and Facebook, have freedom inside the office but they have goals to achieve and they know that. Giving your employees freedom to work how they want and concentrating on letting them know what they need to achieve is better. Employees want to work in an environment where they are comfortable and valued.

Well, I really think that Google monitoring tool helps us to find how our website is working between customers. I am presently using Google analyzer for monitoring my sites visitors and it gives good results now I know that where I am lacking and what my visitors like to watch. Most of the Evil Internet Company follows the same pattern but with different monitoring tools.

I agree with jstojan to a certain extent, but there are tasks in the online-work environment which are not rewarding and can even be boring, repetitive, but they have to be done -- this employee-centered approach doesn't work in these cases. When it comes to these situations, there are programs you can install that will keep the remote employees under surveillance while they are working. I am using one called My Team Monitor which basically logs the number of keystrokes and mouse clicks made, and takes screenshots every few minutes. It is free so I am really satisfied with it. :) You can register at myteammonitor dot com

In my opinion it is good to track where exactly employees spent their time it can help you closely monitor how your employees work. There are times that there are employees who are spending their time on unrelated to work activities just like visiting social networking sites, playing online games, online shopping and etc. However, when using these monitoring tools you need to do it ethically. This will help you prevent privacy issues among employees.
