Would you say that this growing trend towards expecting free intellectual property is a result of a generational change, or a political change?

In other words, is it that today`s younger people "somehow" expect everything to be free? Or is it that there`s a political move toward bringing down capitalism in favor of something like socialism?

generational change.  It`s often viewed as a victim-less crime.  There is also justification that "the creators are not losing any money, because I don`t have any money to buy their stuff.  ergo, it`s ok to take it for free cause they ain`t gettin` paid either way.  ergo, no loss to them, so why not gain for me?"

<sigh> I think you`re right. But if that`s the situation, then it looks to me as if it`s a losing battle. It`s not that easy to change an entire historical movement when it`s taking place culturally. "Atlas Shrugged," here we come.....

on the positive side, I think the napster case and others probably really helped iTunes to come out so the artist could get paid at least something for the electronic downloads.

It`ll be interesting to see what happens after July 15, and Internet radio. Dire predictions abound, and there are sites like Live365.com saying a majority of small radio stations will go off the air. We`ll see if it matters.
