Everyone is starting network lists, how about a list of people interested in exchanging links on their website.

Not all links are accessible to customers who will directly go to your site.  One of the largest reasons to exchange links is to increase your Search Engine Ranking.  Search Engines count how many links exist on the web that backlink to your website and use that as a rating factor for your site.

So not all of the links you have have to be relevant, but you do want to see if the website has a good page ranking and that they have a good amount links also.

If anyone has any other information please let me know.  Also, if I am off anywhere let me know.  This is all information that I have gleaned from SEO websites.

It helps if the links made are relevant for the sake of your own customers.  Bestbuy typically wouldn`t link to a bait and tackle e-commerce store or vice versa.  The best rule of thumb to follow are the 2 common-sense principles that Google put forth - Would you be doing the same thing to your site if search engines didn`t exist? and Does this help the visitors to your site?

While SEO is a burgeoning business (Topping $1 billion a year) many businesses, even multibillion dollar ones, spend money on technical fixes and tricks while the best thing is just to spread with word-of-mouth and content.  A look at the more confusing corporate websites out there is testament to that.

Just because you are linked with many other sites does not automatically give you bonus points.  The search engine crawlers become more interested in your site if it sees that the hits you are getting are coming from already high ranking pages.  It takes notice in the direct-contact hits that connect the two sites, not just the presence of your information on someone else`s site.  (Aaron - I think you said this also)

Google Toolbar has a very handy reference called "PageRank".  It shows you the ranking of any page that you view.  It is very helpful when trying to find link-sharing sites.  You would not want to waste your time linking with a site that has a zero ranking because the chances of someone being on their site to begin with is low.  The toolbar is a free download that has many other tools such as language translation and "search this site only".
