Greetings****

I would like to obtain advice from you regarding methods on getting clients. I have a home business specializing in tutoring service, career development as a job coach, and basic computer training.

If you are in the area tutoring, how were you able to find clients and what source of methods did you use?

If you are in the area as a job coach,
how were you able to locate clients?

However, any home base business advice will also be helpful.

Currently, I have done the following:
Created a website dmbelleducational.com
Sent out announcements through e-marketing aka constantcontact.com
Word of mouth
Faxed and Mailed flyers to non-profit organizations to conduct workshops
Will participate in a 2-day expo event
Posted flyers (colleges and libraries)
Participated in workshops/seminars
Joined Associations
Handed out business cards

Recently, I attended a job fair to pass out flyers as a job consultant, but was turned away by the organizer.

Your suggestions will be greatly appreciated, and I thank you in advance for your support.

I find FREE has an amazing attraction to most people. Offer some Free service just for exposure, experience, and a way to meet potential clients.  I know when I send out my FREE samples, most retailers were more receptive, and actually placed orders.  Hope this helps.  You have done a lot so far, just keep doing it, eventually connections take place. And dont be surprised to find that the most unexpected places can make those connections.  All the best Donna~

Donna, I`m a huge proponent of writing articles, because articles deliver clients. I`ve written over 200 articles, so I know what I`m talking about. Writing articles provides several advanatages and benefits. For example:

1.  Articles Are Viral. If you write articles and allow them to be freely published, your articles become viral, meaning your articles can actually spread like a virus and have the potential to be viewed by thousands of internet users.

2.  Search Engines Love Articles. If you write lots of good, quality articles,  you can expect to get linked to by many high-profile websites, thereby increasing your PR (Page Rank), search engine ranking and traffic.

3.  Credibility. Writing articles is the quickest way to establish credibility online.

4.   Preselling.  Articles are great for preselling. Preselling is the art of warming up potential prospects, and putting them in a buying frame of mind before you actually send them to your website.

5.  Articles Educate. Well written articles educate the reader. This adds to your credibility.

Donna... we have a simple list we call the Five Fundamentals. There are many ways to do each step but each step needs to be done to acquire new clients:

1. Make a list. Every person you think of.
2. Set an appointment. Don`t try to do the appointment.
3. Do the appointment... present your services/benefits. In person is best, or over the phone.
4. Finish with Options. "Here are three ways you can get started... what works for you?"
5. Follow-up. Keep them connected to the service/benefits you provide.

Your efforts above are great ways to do step one... find people to talk to. Once you have them on your list go to the next step. You goal is to set the appointment... not to "sell" your services. Give them a commercial leaving them with a desire to hear more.

The appointment is where you communicate what you can do for them and give them some options. "Where do you see yourself benefiting the most?" When they tell you then follow up with them to lead them to what is best for them. A service they want to pay you for.

Dale... we are fairly new to the Internet. Would you be willing to share how we go about submitting articles. Perhaps you could link us to an article on submitting articles...

We though your suggestion would be worth implementing ourselves to generate some traffic to our web site in progress (about thirty pages at this point).

Appreciate your contributuions.

Scott & Laurie:

The best place to start is to read my article, "The 10 Best Article Directories." To submit articles, simply follow the submission guidelines for each directory.

Post on forums and blogs like you are doing.  Get involved with your local chamber of commerce.  List your services in free classifieds (online can be POWERFUL).  Build your audience before you ask them to buy by starting an inciteful, content rich blog or social network.

Utilize the power of knowledge, information, education and your determination to change your life. How about owning the next Facebook? Do-It-Yourself Course for $97 or we`ll build it for you. Social Networks are now affordable to start, own and can be easily created...what do you love to do?

seems like your business is local and requires the personal (human) touch.  i am not sure how much you have marketed your website but you have an advantage as your business covers a small geographic area. you can focus on local marketing online.  this area is quite broad and i recommend reading the articles on SUN about marketing your local business. there is some very good advise there.

sign up your business in google`s local listings. you get your own link/listing with a map and can develop some coupons that your clients can print off and bring to you. this also gives you instant exposure on google searches so that your business shows up on google when a parent searches for tutoring services in their (which is also yours) city for their kids.

establish relationships with businesses in your area where you think your target customers / clients often visit.  word of mouth referral from other businesses is very powerful and might be all you need in the long run as you get more established.
