I own a document scanning company in Portland, OR.  We have successfully made it to the first & second listing spot for a number of search terms in Google when you search with the city as a key word.  We want to be found nationally as we are expanding our services.  Besides making a page for each state (scanmonkeys.com/texas) or taking out Portland related key words from the meta data and titles, is there a way to increase our chances of being found in other states?

Hello Brian,

You would be amazed at the power of producing videos targeted around your business keywords as well as the physical location or city you are targeting. You have to realize that YouTube is now the world`s 2nd largest search engine right behind Google and if you are not producing a lot of video content and uploading it to YouTube (which Google loves because they own them) then you are really missing out on a massive amount of targeted traffic.

I have some examples on my website that show you exactly how we target local markets by simply producing online mini-commercials and uploading them for our clients. The KEY to this extremely effective marketing strategy is having a large QUANTITY of these online videos ads targeting all the locations around the country you are trying to break into. If you have any other questions please contact me and I will be happy to give you a free 30 minute consultation on how you can ahcieve exactly what you are trying to do, by taking your business nationwide.

You don`t need a page for each state other than a redirect to your main page.  For example http://texas.scanmonkeys.com would be a redirect page to www.scanmonkeys.com.

Listing every state in the metatags would be too much text and Vermont and Wyoming would probably not make it to the search engine index.

Steve,
With the redirect pages, are you recommending that we change the specific state for that redirect within the meta data?  Continuing with Texas as the example:

"<meta name="keywords" content="document scanning Texas scanning company, digital archiving, legal scanning services, document imaging, scanning solutions, electronic document storage"/>"

Or are do you simply suggest creating the address for each state we want to expand to and google will do the rest?

Great idea!

Depending upon how "competitive" your target keywords are, you might not have to do a redirect or landing page or each State.

Does you target market typically search using their home State in the search (my guess they do not).

Yes they do! No one uses the YellowPages anymore so make sure every time you are targeting your keywords you target the city or state you are after... its called "long tail keywords" so don`t listen to the meta tag BS... that is so 2005! Its NOT enought to just have 1 website rank high on Google anymore its all about having hundreds of videos that link back to your website that capture the TOP 3 pages of Google so you can dominate your industry.

All you have to do is use the "Google Keyword Tool" and figure out what your target audience is looking up each month and go after those keywords... this is not rocket science poeple. Listen to a marketer who`s been marketing and been very successful for over 6 years. Research your market on YouTube and see what you come up with and who`s your competition is and go from there.

I don`t know which meta tag BS you are referring to, but search engines typically only look at 100 bytes or so of the keywords tag.  It varies, and it`s a secret.  The limitation apparently came about because many sites were sandbagging their sites with hundreds or thousands of keywords.

More weight would be on <H1> and <H2> tags in your pages.  You could have a <H1>We service in all states</H1> on your home page and make it a link to a second page describing your nation-wide services, and maybe a left-side column listing each state in <H2> tags.  The search engines would find your states and other relevant keywords, possibly pushing you to the first page.

I am not a web designer nor an SEO expert, but I play one online....

"Yes they do"...... search using local. Charles, do you have that search information for ScanMonkeys site?

Sorry, I wasn`t clear enough... when I mentioned "keywords" I was referring to the use of targeted keywords within the site. As Steve says, SEO for those targeted keywords involves use of keywords in the domain, page titles, H1, H2...etc tags, links (in-bound and within the site), bold text, alt image tags, and content.

YouTube is but one tool to market your site and get it to appear in search results.

I`m suggesting, it may be possible to achieve good search results without having to use location pages or sub domains.  How possible depends upon the keywords/phases that are targeted.

I do not suggest  relying only on SEO just as I expect Charles, you would not suggest  relying only on YouTube to market a website. Relying on one approach may be successful in the short term, but as the internet changes, that single approach may not be as successful in the future.

Interesting conversation.  Having done SEO for major corporations, marketing your business using SEO in multiple locations is sometimes a challenge - since search engines only index a limited number of keywords per page.  I agree with TubeVideoPro that long tail is best.  In either case, here is what I found to work...

  • Find out what customers are searching for in the state / region you are looking to advertise in.  Sometimes this varies.  Use the Google adwords tool to do this.
  • Select 2-3 keywords from the list (in the 800-1500 searchs per month range)
  • Build a page for each region / state (does not need to be a sub domain) and optimize it for the 2-3 keywords.
  • Build inbound links to those pages using the keywords and also from mapping sites such as Google or Yahoo.
Its that simple.

Hello John,

Bravo! Fantastic information on how to target in on what local customers will be searching for online and how local business owners can target in on those prospects. This is what we do with our Video SEO services and target in on local search terms with about 500-3000 searches a month on Google and then produce mini-commercials around those keywords. By producing online video ads with the right titles, tags, and descriptions with our clients "long tail local keywords" we are realizing we can claim many of the 1st page results on YouTube within hours and then Google follows right after usually within a 48 hours.

Also, by producing quite a few top listings with our videos we usually see our clients "actual website" rank higher becuase they now have so many relevant backlinks from the videos we produce. I truly believe this is where the new internet economy is heading now that YouTube is the world`s 2nd largest search engine right after Google. Local business owners can save more of their marketing budget by using Video SEO and slowly move their "local marketing model" away from expensive PPC Campaigns that only empty their wallets and produce poor results.

PS. Thanks for the links to all the great resources by the way. Your the man!
