Your site should be user friendly
Content should be original
Don't use more flash, videos in your website

Choose the color scheme wisely. If you are designing a banner which is going to be added on one website only, it will be fine but if the banner is going to be added in more than one website, you have to choose the color and style of the banner which suit well with style of websites where it will get displayed and must have clear visibility regardless of the website’s background color.

Yes, I am agree that choose the color scheme appropriately. Contrast and the color are equally necessary. Always have the dark banner and light text. Bear in mind that key is readability.
