Hi, I`m new to this site so here goes, I`m interested in starting a small import/export business from home. I have done some online research into this business and it seems that most of all import and export businesses are done by home based buisnesses.  My question is, what online courses are reputable in learning how to go about starting this business? I have seen many . many people selling courses online on how to learn how to do this but how do I know who actually is selling a course who actually is in this business from someone who just reserached and wrote an ebook?  Second question. I am an American working in Australia in the mining industry and I have made a few nice friends from a few of the south pacific islands who have relatives in those islands that have pineapple groves,  banana groves , coconut groves, etc. Not one of them is exporting their product to anywhere seems to me there might be an opportunity here.  Getting them to sign an agreement with me to represent them in exporting their fruit doesnt seem to pose a problem but how do I go about finding buyers in other parts of the world who would want this product?   Anyones input concerning this would be a great help and will be greatly appreciated as I am lost.   Thank`s  Russ

I`m not at all an expert in any of what you want to know. But I can put myself into your position, and wonder what I`d do.

I think I`d go out and get a job working for some kind of importing company. I`m not even sure what kinds of jobs are available, but I know there are small and larger companies, and they need support people of various kinds.

Maybe it`d be a secretary, order-taker, phone person, or maybe someone filling out customs forms. What matters is to get the job in a building (not a home) where you`re physically around people who know all about the import-export business. That`ll get you into the flow and stream of information.

It may turn out that the job you take isn`t enough, and you leave in less than  a year. But you`ll know a whole lot more about the next job you "need" to get in order to flesh out your basic sense of the overall field. That`s how I`d do it, anyway. :-)

Thank you for your input, but right now I cant take a job with an import/export company because I`m  in a very lucrative filed right now in Australia, I wanted to get a course to study while Im here, but thanks anyway.

It's a little tricky starting an import/export business. You need to know about shipment and B/L. The more tricky part is getting Letter of Credit and understanding Export documents.
