Kim

Im wondering if there was a different inner reason for your hesitation.  I got the impression from your posts that you are a pretty creative person..

Hi Mike,

Thanks for your encouragement.  I think, at the time, I was just so afraid of failure.  And the idea didn`t "speak" to me the way my current business does.

I also thought that becoming a chef would have taken the joy out of cooking, which I adore.

I would not have done anything differently.

Obviously this is a starters-up page.

People who post here have come to (or passed) the point in life where they know they are capable of making it on their own. That is, they have a mindset which includes a high self-responsibility level, and most importantly: the belief that their trade IS OF VALUE.

I don`t believe I would have gotten to that point without the corporate madness that is my current crazy daytime job, its that simple.

Yeah there were many paths that could have taken, with many outcomes. Some might have been better, some might have been worse, but really, for me this question boils down to: Are you happy with who you are right now?

Yes I am.

If I had to start over again...hmmm...I can not personally answer this question with a straight answer. I know of stuff that I would not do again, but at the same time, I know that its those mistakes and poor decisions that have formed my way of thinking that has in turn led to where I am. Life is a rollercoaster, I just throw my hands in the air and enjoy the ride no matter how many loops it throws at me.

If I could start over again, I am sure that I would end up where I am now. I think I would have taken a straighter route to get here though, if I had given it more thought.

In each job I have had, at some point it became my duty to coach, advise or counsel employees. While at my last job before I retired to work for myself, my manager and I were talking after an office meeting had taken place. At some point in our conversation, he said, "you know what you are?, you are a coach." I am now happy coaching and writing. In my case, I did not know what I knew.

I would`ve never worked for someone other than myself. I was brought up with the idea that you have to `get out there and find a job.` The family tradition of working for the other people. It has taken me a long time to believe that I could ever be my own boss and that running your own business doesn`t mean you have to come up with `the next big thing` to be successful. So, if I could start over I would break free from those chains much earlier in my life and take more chances when I could have more easily absorbed the risks. Despite all the courses I had taken, I fell back on the way I was raised when it came to jobs and finances. My parents always worked for others and were always bad with money, so I spent the first 10-12 years of my adult life doing the same thing.

Finally, my wife and I decided we would break the cycle that both of our parents and siblings were in and teach our children that things can be a lot better. There is no better way to teach them than with actions, and that is what we are aspiring to do now. Plus, there is nobody we trust more to hold to strong ideals and business culture than ourselves (we`ve both worked for companies that sold themselves out (not just financially, but also culturally) and were never the same again). I am hoping to raise my son and daughter with the idea that they can provide for themselves. That they don`t have to `find a job`, but rather can `create a job` instead.

Andreas- Very well put.  It does boil down to, "Are you happy with who you are right now?" Yes, I am as well.

I think as small business owners we go through emotional roller coasters everyday.  Actually it feels like almost every hour sometimes.  One day we’re high as we can be on life for the path we choose and the next we’re questioning every step we take.  We ask ourselves “would it not be easier working for someone else”…but we ultimately would not be satisfied.  Our independence would drive us even crazier.

I think the question is great, “If you could start over again, what would you do?”

My short to the point answer: Nothing!  I love being in business for myself.

I think as small business owners .........

Patagan

Can I pose a question..?

Why do we entreprenuers always refer to ourselves as  "small" business orners?

Why not future "Large" business owners??

Do we have any idea the competitive advantage you create by being a large business and not a small business.  I know here it comes.  because we are small business owners....

I believe it is because most sole proprietors have the same mind set as middle management,  the "show me the money" attitude, yea not having to work for the man also,  but as soon as they start making a decent living (by their own defination) they become happy with where they are get complacant.

I AM LOOKING FOR entreprenuers who are hungry and I mean really hungry,  those who desire to be industry leaders.

Wow. An excellent observation Mike. From now I will simply think of myself as "a business owner".
