Hello all together,

I`m thinking about a website where you can choose, select and order food from typical restaurants in your city in a covenient manner. Especially from restaurants which usually don`t offer delivery (only take-out). Those restaurants could be the one you usually go out for dinner, but sometimes you don`t like to go out to the restaurant, but you like to have that great food.

I´m not talking about the "typical" restaurants which deliver (dominos etc.). It could be your favourite restaurant!

What Do you think about that? Does something like this already exist?

I really appreciate your opinion and help!!

P.S. I`m from Germany...

I heard about a similar business while watching TV a few years back.  The company catered to business luncheons and business parties.  The customer would pay regular price + delivery charge and the company would negotiate prices below reg. price and they made a nice lil margin.  I think there was minimum order size of 6 people/meals or something along those lines.

Locally in Denver there is a company called By Jeeves that breaks down restraunts into different regions, where you can select and order. There is a minimum order price, a set delivery fee, etc.
Their web: www.534togo.com

In New York there is a company called Seamless Web that has the same principal. They have something unique in that they`ve setup billing with companies for work lunches as well as people that have to work late and can order and bill the company directly (as it`s for work purposes).
Their web: www.seamlessweb.com

I think that this would be a cool set of features:

  • Develop your website so that each customer has their own profile
  • Users pre-configure their profiles with specific orders (X dishs at Y restaurant for Z people) delivered to a specific address within a specific window of time
  • Users trigger the order to your store with an e-mail or SMS/text message (market this to commuters)
  • Dinner gets automatically ordered, cooked, delivered while they commute, pick up the kids, etc.

It seems this online food delivery idea works  Here`s a very popular site which started in the Chicago area..... GrubHub.com.  Latest information I`ve read about their progress is that they`re enjoying good success and expanding nationwide.

If you`re thinking of starting this type of online food delivery service in Germany GrubHub.com is a model you may consider exploring.

It is big in California too. It would probably be a great business to get started!

Hi everybody again,

thanks a lot for your help. It seems there are a few differences in the mentioned models. According to the restaurant situation in Germany you have to keep in mind that:

1)   None of the "regular" restaurants offer own delivery services, so this service has to be brought by us (the online food delivery service).

2)   Besides a delivery charge for the ordering customer you need a transaction fee from the restaurant (10% of ordering amount or so). With those two revenue streams it might be possible to make a profitabel business out of that

What Do you think about that topic?

I wouldn`t call it a fee for the restaurant, call it a volume discount.  I want 10% off on all my orders.  Since you are picking it up I think most restaurants would find this price very reasonable.

There is something similar being done already ... saw it on the big idea GoMoBo.com www.gomobo.com

People can order via text message at thier local restaurants and skip the line for pickup I figure only a matter of time before they add delivery. They have some big clients already like Duncan Donuts

How it works? Customers create an account, which includes their credit card details. After signing up for the service, they can order online via www.gomobo.com, or by text message/sms. The order appears on the restaurant`s in-store Mobo system, and is automatically billed to the customer`s credit card. The restaurant confirms the order, and the customer receives a text message stating when the order will be ready for pick up.
