I`m working on a start-up in Canada (similiar to the US). Its an LLC or Corporation, type ownership. I dont have enough money for a lawyer so does anyone know of how to complete the Articles of Incorporation on a basic level and when I can afford a lawyer, can these things change?

Hey,

You can easily complete the arcticles of incorporation yourself.  There are many incorporating your own business kits, available from the registries here in Alberta.

I would however recommend that, even though you may not be able to afford a professional, you discuss the particulars of your incorporation with an accountant.  You need to ensure that the way your corporation is set up will work well relative municipal, provicial, and federal corporate tax regimes.  You can always change the incorporation, but it can cost you alot to do so in the future.  Try not to do what I do often...over complicate thi8ngs for no reason.

1.  talk to an accountant

2.  check your for other resources at your local CSBC (Canadian Small Business Centre).

3.  get a DIY Incorporation kit or somthing similiar with some instructions.

4.  Double check, triple check, your paperwork

5.  submit and pay your fees

You`ve done the right thing by reaching out here to other business owners.  SuN is an amazing resource, but since this the incorporation processes are different here in Canada, you may want to try connecting with some business owners in your area.  I`ve always been pleasantly surprised by the willingness of established business owners, to help some starting out with such things.

I hope you find my comments useful.  I`ve bookmarked your website and look forward to reading more about your company as you move bravely into the future.

You`re venturing into a very "top of mind" areana right now, especially politically (in Canada).  Have you researched grants and government assistance in getting your project up and going.

As you may know there are calls from some politicians, media, and other special interest groups that are calling for caps on emissions from the oil sands development in Alberta.  The Alberta goverment has stated that development will be reigned but not reduced, as any type of developmental moritorium or production shut down would devestate the economy...not just in Alberta either, even our American friends here would see gas price spike again.

The whole global warming debate as of late, proposed environmental accords...Energy and the environment are big now.  Use that momentum, put your plans together, get some good experienced talent to help you out, get some investment, and go for it!

Sorry...rambled a bit...ciao
