Our company will start to lay off some people for economical reasons, I would be extremly happy to be part of the people that are going to be layed off.

Now you must start thinking this guy is nuts, he has a good salary and needs to keep his day job while creating his software product.

Well, there are some good side for living in France, the social protection is very good compared to most countries, let me explained you why I`m not worry about loosing my job.

In France if you`re layed down for economical reason, you get this

1 - During 8 months you get 100% of your total monthly salary

2 - After 9 months you get 56% of your monthly salary, and then it goes in decreasing after 12 month, 18 months and so forth ...

3 - You can get financial help from the French governement when trying to build your start up (I can`t tell you how much, I`ve not investigate this further yet)

A lay off would allow me to create my product while still having a regular income, and if after 2 years the sales of my product are not good , I can always go back to a regular type of job, and try creating something else ... Life is good, life is simple

What`s is it like in the US if you get lay off for economical reasons ? is it different from a state to another ? can you get financial help from the governement ?

Best Regards from France,

Wannabe Entrepreneur stuck in cubicle

Just think...when you become the EMPLOYER how much in unemployment taxes you are going to have to start paying out for your employees!

That way they can sit at home and figure out ways to escape your company

Works both ways.

The short answer to your question is that "it depends" on the employer what type of severage package their laid off employees receive.  In some cases, employees are eligible for unemployment benefits, but the amount they receive comes nowhere close to their full-time salary.

Be thankful for what you receive from being located in France!

Well, sort of, the flip side of the coin is that tax on income (your salary as an employee) is heavily tax.

But then most top notch school are free, health system/drugs are free and you get a lot of unemployment benefits

MarkB :

Well you get that kind of benefits ONLY if the company lay you off for economical reason, you will get peanuts if you`re fired for being a slacker or  you`re being unprofessional.

Since in my company we`re in a lay off (due to economical reason) period, it`s legitimate for me to think what I would do next in my career, I`ve payed my income tax since 12 years and it`s normal that I can now benefits to some of the tax I did contributed for 12 years. It`s not like I`m stealing or abusing the system (I`ve always worked hard and will continue to do so)

Ho! and regarding your comment :

"That way they can sit at home and figure out ways to escape your company"

Very unlikely, this is France here, entrepreuneurship scare the hell out of the majority of people over here, starting a business over here is almost viewed as being some sort of alien or trying to commit financial suicide. Most French want to have a nice 09h00 to 17h00 (ideally well paid) job and enjoying their 35 hours per week + 5 weeks holiday

Tarek,

here in the UK you only receive what the company gives you. Minimum 1 weeks salary for each year worked at the company. The majority of larger companies provide 4 weeks pay per year. That is it!

As the company you work for, are laying individuals off - can you ask to be laid off? The more people who `volunteer` the less compulsory lay offs the company have to give out and that can be `better` for the company brand.

I`ve now beenn officially made rendundant for economical reason, I can tell you that it feels a bit odd to tell your family & friends your now unemployed, there`s that odd feeling of being a little bit worthless ..

I can now starting pursuing my entreprenarial goal, that`s short term :

- Start working as a freelance software developer & project manager (to feed my little family) -> I`ve got already a few gigs lined up (mainly ex bosses who want to hire my services)

- Start Working on my software product (which will be sold on the internet)

Managing the freelance gigs and the creation of a full blown product sounds like a daunting task

Wish me good luck & success as this might a journey fulls of ups & downs ...

I just hope I will be able to be as goal oriented as I wanted to be, and not procrastinate too much (this is a killer for any early start up company)

As they say, be careful what you ask for because you`ll most likely get it. :-)
