Good morning, SuN community!

I am at a point where I need some opinions and feedback about my site. I`m specifically looking for feedback on the following:

  • What do you think of the look and feel?
  • What do you think the purpose of the site is?
  • Who do you think makes up the target customer base?
  • What do you think of the tag line? Does it rsonate with you? Do you have other ideas for the tag line?

I know I stll have work to do as far as the site certificate, sign-up links and testing on all browsers, but I want to make sure I have a foundation to start with first. My goal is to have my target user-base "get it" when they see just the home page. I want to avoid having them have to jump to another page to learn more about it.

The URL is www.kick-about.com.

Thank you for taking the time to look at my site and provide feedback.

Hi Steve,
Seems to me the site is a VoIP system for long-distance voice/video communication?

I`d assume the target market would be people who have to travel a lot for business or other purposes, like your image of the military.

The tag line is okay.

All in all, there`s no sales pitch or content. I think you`d have a good place for at least a basic pitch on the 14-day trial page. Instead of having only a registration form, that`s where (to the right) you`d put in your pitch.

Why not use a cellphone? If someone is carrying a laptop and power supply, wouldn`t they also have a phone? Your pitch would cover those questions.

I want to echo Erin and CraigL,
The first thing I asked myself was: What is this all about? and if CraigL wouldn`t have said it was VOIP I wouldn`t of known.

Glider,
Take Vonage for example, or Packet8. You need content... remember back in elementary :WHO, WHAT, WHEN, WHY and in the business world HOW MUCH?

So for example, WHO are you? WHAT is your business about? WHEN did you start or when can the customer use your service... WHY do they need to pay for this service when Yahoo Chat, AIM(AOL Instant Messenger), and SKYPE offers this feature for free? What makes your services better, than using a free service?

The how much part, will not matter much if you can persuade your customer to buy from you.

In business "Persuasion is the Key To Success" I think what you need to do is, sit back and analyze your business model for a few. Answer the 4 questions above and you will see the light.
I think what you need to do is revisit your web site, and put more content into the front page.
Not only the front page but all pages... Explain to your customer how it works? What type of equipment do they need? Why is your service UNIQUE ...... Make it sound important...

I agree .... there is absolutely nothing telling me what is offered, what I get out of it, how it works, how reliable it is, how it compares to other services, or anything about you or your company.

Not saying it`s a bad idea .... you just don`t inform us what the overall idea really is. I think we realize, as you said, that you aren`t done with much of the informational aspect, but you really need something on the main page or sign-up page even at this point.

I might be willing to do a free trial, if there is more information telling me the details.

Erveryone,

Thanks for the feedback. I value it very much.

By asking you to review the site, I was testing to see if the page communicated what the service was the way I intended. It`s clear that it is not doing that very well. In my review request, I was intentionally vague, not to keep you in the dark, but to see if I came close to my objective. I do have answers for the questions you have asked. It`s just not communicated very well. My goal is to have the home page model a single page magazine ad. I get one page to sell the service, if it can be achieved.

Craig was close as to what the service is. In a nutshell, it`s web-based video BBS, intended for friends and family who are geographically separated. Friends and family can see and hear each other, without having to be awake at the same time, or having to create, send or wait for a photos, video tape or DVD. It`s kind of like a private YouTube, but the users don`t have to be technical. I doubt some grandparents would be savvy enough, or even have the desire, to edit and upload a video to a web site.

When my beta testers use it, they get it. But I`m struggling with how to explain it to the average non-technical user. Heck, many of the technical people I worked with at the Mother Ship were so youg they didn`t know what a BBS is. :-/

I am open to suggestions as to what to do for the home page, and if you have any opinions on the concept.

Thanks,

Steve

" Friends and family can see and hear each other, without having to be awake at the same time "

OK, I`m lost at this part of it .... maybe I`m thinking too much in the traditional sense .... but how do you see and hear people without being awake?

And honestly, I don`t know what BBS is in the sense of this type of program.

Webline,

Fair question. When people use webcams, instant messaging, Skype, etc., each party must we awake and using the tool in realtime. Just like a phone call. Now if we have two parties who are in time zones twelve hours apart, one party must be up early, and the other must be up late.

With Kickabout, one person can record a message and send it to one or more recipients. Then, the recipients can play the message on their own time. Then that can respond if they choose to do so. In this case, you may think of it as video email. But Kickabout is slightly different.

When messages are sent to multiple recipients, each recipient as well as the sender can see all responses. The original message and all responses now become conversations. This is where it`s more like a BBS (or forums nowadays). So all participants can follow along and participate in a discussion, and can even come back to it in the future to recall what was discussed.

Kickabout isn`t revolutionary. It`s video mail and discussions built upon a social network. I just want to aggregate the functionality and bring it to a niche market. But how do I best articulate this to non-technical users?

Thanks for contributing to the discussion and helping me flush things out.

OK, makes much more sense now .... and the BBS, I wasn`t relating to forums/discussion boards.

I think that taking a more simplified explanation of what you just provided and putting it into a easy to follow flow chart, with images, would work .... would be helpful for the savvy and not-so-savvy people to get a quicker grip on the concept .... just a suggestion.

Webline,

Thanks again for the thoughtful discussion and feedback. I`ve been struggling to articulate exactly what it is in easy terms. I always find myself having to explain scenarios and people either enthusiastically get it, and start throwing out more scenarios, while other just say "ok".

I really want even those who are not interested to understand what it is and does, without having to give the long explanation. I need an elevator pitch.

Would you mind elaborating just a little on your flow chart idea? I think I get it, but don`t quite have the "ah ha" yet. But the flow chart idea is intriguing. In addition, it would use less bandwidth than the flash I have right now. :-)

Thanks,

Steve
