What`s the one piece of advice you wish someone would have told you about starting a business?

Just start it.
You have to jump out the plane and then invent the parachute.

That working a zillion hours a week for yourself is ENTIRELY DIFFERENT than working a zillion hours a week for someone else. Knowing what I know now, I look back at the hours I used to put in at my jobs and I can hardly believe the owners weren`t falling all over themselves to thank me for saving their butts. If I`d have known, I would have started my own business a LONG time ago.

Also, that charging too little scares away more people than charging too much.

New businesses are like babies. You cannot depend on a baby business to support your family in the first year of its existence. Never mind what that swanky seminar person telling you it`s "so-easy-anybody-can-do-it-and-make-a-fortune" says. A business is really hard work.  In its early stages it will take more than it gives. Developing it to the place where it is finally profitable WILL take TIME and more money than you expect especially if the business is one where you will have an extremely steep learning curve. If you are a real enterpreneur, though, hang on, hang on, endure, endure and hang on.

My CPA told me the reason we go into business is to have fun and make money, and one without the other isn`t good enough.  This is sage advice.

In order to stay focused and motivated, you need to find the reason you want to go into business.  If you are sick of the daily commute or too much time away from home, these are reasons (pain) for making the changes and staying motivated.  The old adage "no pain, no gain" is quite relevant.  If you cannot find anything wrong with your current situation, there is no impetus to fix it.
