1- I`ll be selling electronics , and I`m not selleing services.
TJ says: Great! Welcome to the world of on-line retailing.
TJ says: So you will need a system that will automatically split the orders based on vendor code and send an e-mail to each oth the "drop-shippers" with just their part of the order, even if there a multiple items ordered.
3-I`m going to use Paypal payments ...
TJ says: May I make an un-solicited suggestion? Create a merchant account and set yourself up to use a standard CC preocessing check-out , rather than going through PayPal. Still offer PayPal as a method of payment, but use the check-out module associated with the cart as your primary check-out. You will find less shopping cart abandonment. "Look like the big boys ... act like the big boys." PayPal is great, but it gives the impression of a smaller, home-based organization.
4-I`ll charge for shipping , I want to be able to offer free shipping as a pormotion .
TJ says: Ok, please explain exactly how you will calculate S/H charges, if product is going all over the country, from multiple "drop-shippers" to multiple destinations? (I`m not trying to put you down ... I`m just looking to see how you will adress it.)
5-yes I`ll offer shipping to multiple destinations.
TJ says: Great! So your shopping cart will need the ability to offer multiple "ship To" locations in the check-out process.
6-I`ll be listing about 500-1000 products.
TJ says: Wow, thats a large data base. You`ll see why I asked Question #7.
7- I don`t know yet , but does this make a difference?
TJ says: Here was Question #7 ...If more than 20, does your shopping cart / data base allow you to work off-line ... prior to adding, modifying or deleting a product? Or does everything need to be done on-line?
With over 500 items in your "super store", working on-line adding 1 item to the store at a time can be very time consuming and awkward. If you loose an internet connection, all the work you had done might be wasted, prior to putting the item into the store. If the data base if off-line, you always have a "back-up" store, if any data is lost. Price changes, item placement, "out-of-stock" items, deletions can be done off-line, for multiple items, then up-loaded at your convenience. With this type system, you can offer "blue-light specials" and with a few click take them down, put up new ones, change them around ... just with a few clicks.
8- yes I`d like to offer promotions and coupons.
TJ says: Great! So in your check-out process, you will want an area that allows the shopping to input a "promo code" and it calculates a certain percentage discount.
9- yes I`d like to allow gift certificates.
TJ says: Fantastic! Gift certificates and gift cards are a true money maker. Internet redemption of gift certificates is approx. 68% ... which means 32% of ALL gift certificates are NEVER redeemed. (PURE PROFIT !!) Your system should be able to create, maintain, edit , delete, and print "custom" gift certificates ... with the ability of a "rolling balance" just like a gift card.
10- I`ve never heared of this feature before , but it sounds cool , I`m not sure if these two shopping carts have this feature .
TJ says: Not many shopping carts / data base catalog systems offer this. But boy, wouldn`t it be wild to be able to create, edit and print a "show special" paper catalog, or a wholesale catalog, or a catalog of selected items ... at the touch of a button. And then just a few moments later, re-sort the catalog ... and create an entirely "new" catalog listing for printing or buning it onto cd`s ... for easy distribution.
