I`ve used x-cart www.x-cart.com . I`ve recommended and have implemented them for my clients and have not had a complaint.  They have alot of add-on modules to help manage or promote your products.  Hope this helps.

First of all, welcome to the Forums.

Now, let`s get down to the nitty-gritty of what you want to do. I hope I don`t intimidate you with these questions, but it might be necessary to help prevent you from doubling your efforts and expenses.

  1. For e-commerce, will you be selling a product / products? Or providing a service?
  2. If you are selling products, will be you carrying the inventory or having product "drop-shipped"?
  3. What type credit cards are you considering processing? Are you considering integrating PayPal into your payment method?
  4. Will you be charging for S/H? Or offering FREE S/H?
  5. Are you going to offer product to be shipped to multiple destinations?
  6. How many different products do you envision carrying in your on-line store?
  7. If more than 20, does your shopping cart / data base allow you to work off-line ... prior to adding, modifying or deleting a product? Or does everything need to be done on-line?
  8. Are you interested in offering a "promo" discount code?
  9. Are you interested in offering gift certificates? If yes, does the system provide for generating and maintaining that "gift certificate" data base, to work in conjunction with the shopping cart?
  10. Will either of the 2 carts you`ve mentioned allow you to create and print a "catalog" of all or selected items from your data base into a .pdf file (for easy "show catalog" creation, e-mail marketing, or cd rom catalog creation)?

Now that we`ve given you some things to think about ... take your time ... post your answers ... and then lets talk about which type e-commerce shopping cart / data base catalog will work best for you.

3-I`m going to use Paypal payments PRO

4-I`ll charge for shipping , I want to be able to offer free shipping as a pormotion .

5-yes I`ll offer shipping to multiple destinations.

6-I`ll be listing about 500-1000 products

7- I don`t know yet , but does this make a difference.

8- yes I`d like to offer promotions and coupons

9- yes I`d like to allow gift certificate

10- I`ve never heared of this feature before , but it sounds cool , I`m not sure if these two shopping carts have this feature

1- I`ll be selling electronics , and I`m not selleing services.

TJ says: Great! Welcome to the world of on-line retailing.

2- 99.9 % of the products will be dropshipped from two or three vendors

TJ says: So you will need a system that will automatically split the orders based on vendor code and send an e-mail to each oth the "drop-shippers" with just their part of the order, even if there a multiple items ordered.

3-I`m going to use Paypal payments ... [/quote]

TJ says: May I make an un-solicited suggestion? Create a merchant account and set yourself up to use a standard CC preocessing check-out , rather than going through PayPal. Still offer PayPal as a method of payment, but use the check-out module associated with the cart as your primary check-out. You will find less shopping cart abandonment. "Look like the big boys ... act like the big boys." PayPal is great, but it gives the impression of a smaller, home-based organization.

4-I`ll charge for shipping , I want to be able to offer free shipping as a pormotion .

TJ says: Ok, please explain exactly how you will calculate S/H charges, if product is going all over the country, from multiple "drop-shippers" to multiple destinations? (I`m not trying to put you down ... I`m just looking to see how you will adress it.)

5-yes I`ll offer shipping to multiple destinations.

TJ says: Great! So your shopping cart will need the ability to offer multiple "ship To" locations in the check-out process.

6-I`ll be listing about 500-1000 products.

TJ says: Wow, thats a large data base. You`ll see why I asked Question #7.

7- I don`t know yet , but does this make a difference?

TJ says: Here was Question #7 ...If more than 20, does your shopping cart / data base allow you to work off-line ... prior to adding, modifying or deleting a product? Or does everything need to be done on-line?

With over 500 items in your "super store", working on-line adding 1 item to the store at a time can be very time consuming and awkward. If you loose an internet connection, all the work you had done might be wasted, prior to putting the item into the store. If the data base if off-line, you always have a "back-up" store, if any data is lost. Price changes, item placement, "out-of-stock" items, deletions can be done off-line, for multiple items, then up-loaded at your convenience. With this type system, you can offer "blue-light specials" and with a few click take them down, put up new ones, change them around ... just with a few clicks.

8- yes I`d like to offer promotions and coupons.

TJ says: Great! So in your check-out process, you will want an area that allows the shopping to input a "promo code" and it calculates a certain percentage discount.

9- yes I`d like to allow gift certificates.

TJ says: Fantastic! Gift certificates and gift cards are a true money maker. Internet redemption of gift certificates is approx. 68% ... which means 32% of ALL gift certificates are NEVER redeemed. (PURE PROFIT !!) Your system should be able to create, maintain, edit , delete, and print "custom" gift certificates ... with the ability of a "rolling balance" just like a gift card.

10- I`ve never heared of this feature before , but it sounds cool , I`m not sure if these two shopping carts have this feature .

TJ says: Not many shopping carts / data base catalog systems offer this. But boy, wouldn`t it be wild to be able to create, edit and print a "show special" paper catalog, or a wholesale catalog, or  a catalog of selected items ...  at the touch of a button. And then just a few moments later, re-sort the catalog ... and create an entirely "new" catalog listing for printing or buning it onto cd`s ... for easy distribution.

If you are using Paypal Payments why not use Paypal`s shopping cart?  I used it on a site I ran for about a year and while it doesn`t have a huge number of features it got the job done.  If I remember right it did sales tax and shipping and then allowed the shopper to check out using a credit card on the secure Paypal page that you design.  Check out Paypal`s cart if you are going to use them for credit card processing anyways.

If you do decide to go with Paypal or have questions drop me a line.  It took me a little while to figure out how to incorporate the cart to my site, maybe I could save you some time if you have questions.  Oh I almost forgot the best part, the Paypal cart is totally free.  Seems like the other ones I was looking at wanted to charge me.

Rania,
Check out King Cart http://www.kingcart.com. The cost is just $10 a month and there is no per item fee. King Cart offers coupons, gift certificates, sales tax and shipping calculation. You are able to upload and download item lists, including data feeds for Froogle. You can begin using PayPal and move up to credit cards later. I process my cards offline. That allows me to assure my customers they will not be charged until their order is confirmed and ready to ship and saves the cost of a gateway.

The folks at King Cart have also been very helpful and respond to email within 24  business hours to non-urgent requests and questions. Fortunately I have not had any urgent requests in 3 years of using this cart.
