Sometimes when I close a window on Internet Explorer, instead of closing completely it goes to an "About Blank" screen, just a white screen that I can`t exit out of, only minimize it.  I have collected as many as 6 to 10 of these. This seems to be slowing down my computer terribly.  The only way I have come up with to get rid of them is to restart my computer.  Can anyone out there give me some ideas on how to fix this?  It seems that my I.E. is corrupted.  Should I download a new I.E.?  Can I do that without losing any of my files?  Should I do it from the net or from my windows xp disc?  Is there some way to do it without charge?

Thank you for your help,
Hubert

Hubert,

You should check your computer for viruses & spyware.

Windows Defender is a good free anti-spyware tool.  You can get it here:

http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/de fault.mspx

If you don`t have an anti-virus software, you can do a free scan here:

http://housecall.trendmicro.com/

If you don`t find any spyware or viruses on your computer, then you may have to download IE again, or even possibly reinstall Windows XP if that doesn`t work.

Another option is Spybot Search & Destroy, as well as the lesser-known A-Squared (they do a good job with trojans). Try to avoid Norton`s anti-virus, as it`s expensive and really hard to remove.

Thanks Oleg and Craig,

Actually I am now using AOL security, which is mostly McAfee.  I did use Norton in the past, but was unimpressed.  It would tell me I had a Trojan Horse, but they could do nothing about it, but tell me I had a problem.  Things seem to be under control.  At one boot up my system ran some scan and was able, as it said, to recover my registry, or something like that.  Since then it seems better.
