BrandAlchemy,
If you think StartupNation is doing such a poor job why don`t you write your own book and start your own business radio show and website? That sounds like a lot of work. You seem to know exactly how it should be done. We all know it`s really easy to criticise. Actually doing something yourself, now that takes something more.

As for the subscription idea, I`m in the midst of a bootstrap startup myself. Money is tight. If there were a charge I doubt I`d be here right now. Besides working to get the business off the ground, my wife and I are trying to adopt four children. Is this a good time to take on added responsibility and expense? No, but it needs to be done and we`re trying to do it. It`s part of who and where we are right now. If I want to share that part of my life with the people at SUN, I`m glad they don`t tell me "this is only a place for serious business discussion; take that personal stuff elsewhere."

Honestly, I am often impressed by the nonsence that SUN tolerates. They are far more tolerant (pragmatic, diplomatic, whatever) than I would be. I have been here from day one. People come, people go. The atmosphere changes over time. I have suggested changes and my suggestions have been graciously received. If the day comes when I fail to receive value for my time here, I`ll move on. What I won`tdo is tell them how they should run their business. I`ll be too busy running mine.

By the way, to the best of my knowledge, Birmingham, Michigan is not a former Soviet republic.

BrandAlchemy,

A couple of suggestions that may make your experience here more enjoyable:

  1. If you want to improve the quality of discussions on the board, why not lead by example and start some threads with the subject matter that you find relevant?
  2. Invest in a mouse with a scroll wheel.

Wow! I almost feel defensive. That is hard to do........I am confused....isn`t this place a positive resource for folks in business? I believe so. If not I would not tell everyone I know about it and suggest they join. Here we have 2 guys and a great team, working everyday to assist with tools, educational resources, audio, a socail platform, bringing likeminded folks together to all of us within it`s own "online" nation and someone is complaining. First off, it is not my company, so what would it be my business to watch the traffic statistics...not my job and up or down, it is part of the ride and what may initiate change or alterations to this resourcful community. When I think of startup nation, I never think of those posts by people once in a while trying to place an advertisement in the forums. What I think of for one is, Wow I am so grateful for the infinite amount of information that is not only given by the staff but by the community. I think of the really neat folks I now speak to off of the site, the relationships I have built to help me grow and my business grow. I think of Nikole who puts so much vaulable information on these forums...which she does because she wants to, not because she is getting paid to....what a neat person this woman is!!  She is a wealth of information whom is consistant and filled with moxy!! I think of cookie monster, giving such great advice to anyone who has copyrighting issues. I think of the two lady who deal with dip and the jerky lady who is always giving advice. I Always think of Craig whom I love reading words of wisdom, truley. He definately makes me think differently from time time.  I think about the neat gals who have the thread "can we build a business together" and wonder how that "oh Denise" does it all. I wonder how That "sam" is doing. I think of how truley awesome it is that Nikole created the most beautiful site for _Pursue_The _Passion folks. How she has enabled them to really grow with such a beautiful presence online. She walks the walk...has anyone actually looked at her code................. it is always, and I mean always perfect, The girl is good and I hope to work with her soon. I think Of a really talented women Melanaie at Rembrant Writes who is "holy cow" talented. I Remember how Vickidrawers was so kind and gracious to me. I think of that really cool guy who does cool posterart. ....and the guy who offerd to let me use his articles on my new site.

My point is this, I am grateful. You get out of something , what you want to give into it. These 2 gentleman who happen to be brothers probably work there tail off more than we all care to imagine, to build a place not only to grow there business to to genuinly grow ours. And if you don`t think so, i think that is on you. What i know is that this place is inspiring and a great motivator for me and that is what I get out of it. That is what I choose to get out of it. Whatever we choose becomes our consequence, that is life, and boy I have chosen to have a great one!

Ok, I need to climb up on my broom/soapbox and sound off.  The forums are great places to stimulate your brain, get information and in general, improve the experience of going it alone, because here, you do not feel alone.   You are part of a community, fruits, nuts and all.  I like it here.

Jeff, your thinly veiled attempts to help/be nosy on a clearly successful site make me wonder about you.  Speaking for most of us, I will tell you the same thing I tell most people complaining about something...Namely, this is the USA and we have freedom.  Use yours to read/post/prospect somewhere else if you don`t like it here.

Vaya con dios.....

I have been with SuN now for quite a while, and I`ve seen plenty of good and bad!  But I must give Brand Alchemy credit for his consistancy.  I find it funny that one of his suggestions mentions featuring people who can actually communicate well.  Defintely not Brand Alchemy`s strong suit.  Calling the kettle black some might say.  Alchemy can come off as condescending, and sometimes as a bit of a bully.  Opinions are one thing, but to belittle others opinions because they aren`t in line with your own, that another thing all together.

I`m not trying to grandstand or anything, but I commend Rich for his diplomacy as well.  the way you say, "funny, Joel has called several times", and the you can call me bull, clearly demonstrates this condescention i refer to.  Call it telling it like it is or honesty or whatever you want to justify it!   But it is what it is!

BUT, I do appreciate your craving for deeper discussion!  Don`t get me wrong.  Very few people want to enter into deep conversation with you.  This is because you have very little tolerence for ignorance...just try to remember that ignorance is simply not knowing, and thats what people new to business come here for, to learn!  Maybe it`s time to find a community of  business owners with years of experience and education, not one with a mixed membership.  Tip:  if it has "Start up" in the title, it means there ar e probably newbies.  Than maybe you can stay with SuN too, and drop back once and a while to give some constructive critism!

As far as the tea conversation goes.  Thats why there are categories in the forum, to help people find what theya re looking for without being overwhelmed by topics that don`t interest them.  If a topic doesn`t interest you, don`t go there!

You`ve given plenty of valuable advice, and I think it would be sad if you did leave SuN.  But lets be honest, if your not happy here something has to change!

Keep up the good work Sun Team.  I hope you find what you are looking for Brand Alchemy!
