I know this is probably a common problem. I have a great idea for a device but I am not an engineer and have no idea how to build my prototype. I know my idea is not patentable so how do I find someone to help me design and build my product without me getting my idea ripped off?

Robb over at Phluid Inc. is a good friend of mine.  I used to own half of the company with him back in 2005.  Now I've moved on to new industries.  Robb over at Phluid Inc. is building a prototype for me right now.  I'm spending almost $200K and I have no patents on the device yet.  The guys over at designmyidea will be finishing up my prototype.

I have many aspects of engineering going into my device.  Industrial, Electrical, and Mechanical Engineering designs are all going into it.  I trust Robb and his staff entirely.  Plus, being a former partner in the design company, let me answer your question by saying the following:  These design guys and even most design engineers don't care about taking or stealing your idea.  They are there to help you succeed.  Engineers are not wired like us entreprenuers.  They are only thinking technical aspects and smaller number signs.  You and I are thinking millions and billions.  They don't have that drive to make those kinds of numbers.

So feel rest assured that your product ideas will  be safe with them.

Go to a reputable company and check their references.

Most good PD companies won't violate confidentiality because that is our stock in trade.

I can recommend a few if you like.

Building prototypes can be quite hard. I've seen it done and the amount of money going into doing it if things pane out right. Hopefully you can get all the information and help you need. Wish I knew more about it so I could help you.

I have a strong manufacturing background and yeah, I agree.  Building prototypes can be quite hard.  But only if you have short changed yourself in your design budget.  Prototypes take resources and resources cost money.  You should always allow yourself plenty (and I mean plenty) of money into your prototype mockups.    I am having a prototype built that should cost about $100K.  But I have allotted myself almost $200k to account for possible overrun.

If you have a great idea that you are sure of to make tons of money, then always cushion your business plan with plenty of dough.  It will keep your stress levels down and your positive energy up.

What if you do not have $100K for a prototype? I know I do not. My idea is inexpensive, simple and small, but I work a minimum wage job. How should I go about implementing my idea? I've been thinking about selling the idea since I don't have the money to implement it. What do you think I should do?
