peuntea,
Great idea. My mom is in an senior high-rise now and I was talking to my sister about this same idea over the holidays. Atlanta is full of these centers as I am sure most major cities are, as the senior and boomer generations are huge and growing.
I believe credentials and bonding are necessary beginnings. Taking the time in the pre-business launch stage to sit down with center managers and discuss what they see as issues and needs. I told my sister that lunches are a great way to have these relationship building sessions. Don`t talk about your ideas ... just listen and ask lots of questions and take the time to develop true friendly relationships ... remember, your clients are somebody`s parent(s).
Yes, most of thes places have great service (I said most). Buses and trips to grocery stores, outings, etc. However, talking to residents tells me there are many more things they want and this is why I believe there is a business here in providing additional servies. And trust with the centers will be inportant. Once you win the center managers over, then you have one leg up with the residents.
It would be a rewarding and fulfilling business.

There is a notion that senior citizens neither use nor care for new technologies that can help them stay independent. As a physician I have seen many advances in health care and communications technologies that allow senior citizens to be independent and stay independent. Search out those that are user friendly. You will be amazed at the proportion of seniors that will embrace these and may be away into this market in some cases.
As crazy as this may sound.....having dinner with you family even when they are in another state via live streaming TV can drastically reduce the felling of loneliness and abandonment that many feel
Good Luck....GREAT IDEA....an "I should have thought of that" idea.
Great idea! Do you have flyers/brochures which you could give to Senior Housing counselors and/or Doctors? Also, does your area have a social service referral program such as: http://www.211.org/ ? If so are you eligible to register your business with them?
