Kathy... That`s so funny. When I began playing (1980), that`s the song friends of my parents would ask if I could play.  But I can play it. To be honest, I wonder what the big deal is with that tune. Yes, it`s a good track from back in the day, but really... the drum part is not difficult.

Kathy... That`s a VERY difficult question to answer. Let me indirectly provide an answer...

I don`t think there is any song (not solo) which is particularly difficult for me. And that might provide some hint of my skill level. On the other hand... I could really suck, and just think I play well.

I can`t think of a single song that is incredibly complicated, but I do think different music styles have different technical levels. For example, I am definitely a "Rock and Blues" style drummer.

I find Jazz to be a style of music with a high technical level. There are multiple patterns being played, on each limb (legs & arms). And in many cases, the playing style is very light to the touch. Actually as I am writing this, I am thinking I am not very clear about what`s a difficult song...

In the past I have played in the symphony (some sheet reading skills which are not completely gone), swing band (a lot of jazz techniques), rock band, and even a Vietnamese band!

So what would I consider a difficult song??? I don`t have one. But I can pick all the typical, top tier drummers and say... Those performers are hard to match. I won`t say follow, because following is easy. Matching skills and exceeding others is very difficult.

I remember after Wipe-Out, the next big thing for a drummer was, "Can you play the solo for "Inna Gadda Da Vida?" LOL!!.....the "album version." Back then, there was the "45 version," for singles (about 3 minutes), then the album version on the long-play (LP) vinyl records. Those were 22-minutes per side.

Speaking of percussionists, did you know Joel was featured on the front of Cowbell Magazine?
Joel was once referred to as the Keith Moon of the Cowbell.
Not so much for his cowbell playing, mainly because of his penchant for trashing hotel rooms.

Vince - It`s not a failure. Letting go of the venture if it is not bringing you true happiness or wads of money is a smart decision. Lots of people can start a business - only a few have the wisdom to quit one at the right time.

Good luck!

If it`s cowbell tunes we should learn, I believe "Low Rider" needs to be in the play list. I also think I`ll write a tune named "Cowbell Success or Bust". That way Joel can put together some sort of cowbell solo. Wait... Maybe that`s not a good idea. He might decided to go solo as an artist. Then what do we have? Without the crowd pleaser it might be a bust.

You`re right. Without the cowbell guy, what`s a band really worth?
