I`m kind of in a rut. I guess you could say that I`m having an infomation overload. Over the past few months I have been learning different things here and there, but I don`t know where to start to get my buisness rolling.

The Idea:
Create a fictional world to build a series of books off of.

The Spin:
I only intend to build this as a platform for other writers who need a structure for their stories. I create the creatures, races, religions, environments, etc while other writers fill in the blanks as they see fit, as long as all the stories follow.

Primary Media:
Internet

Fields of expansion:
I can use this idea to expand into several entertainment fields(Anime, online gaming and paperback books(or e-books nowadays) )

Issues:

Where do I start and how would I procede? I would think I have to form a company (LLC ) first? If so, what field would it be in and how would I check if the name is taken? I live in NY and any links or information would be helpful, thanks!

For starters go to your local county clerk in NY and register your business as a DBA.

Secure the URL you want through GoDaddy (or some other url registration site) and let me know when you`re ready to get a logo designed for your new venture!

Side note - I think I`d be interested in contributing to your business. Perhaps have a series of guest writers that help build traffic on your site? Dunno ... :)

Could you perhaps use some sort of Wiki software? You would have your overall guidelines for "the world," then allow people to write to the parts that they`re interested in. Maybe?

Answer the question. Who is my market/audience? What pain do they have? What do I know, what can I do to help? That will drive product develoment.

Like some others have suggested, I would have started with a wiki or just a blog perhaps where you can create those characters. If you like, you can create wikis at a site such as www.wikia.com. If you want to keep this in a private area, I think they do allow private wikis. You will still have to seed your content with graphics et al. If you dont want to do it yourself, you may want to hire a designer. If you want, you can use freelancers and sites such as www.elance.com. That should get you started. You need to incorporate only when you start entering into contracts of any kind. Remember that even if you dont sign an explicit contract with anyone, posting information on the Internet may expose you to copyright laws. In such case too, you may want to incorporate before you start. Its upto your business activities.

As for your questions, you may need to contact your appropriate business registration authorities. I am not an accountant or a lawyer and am based in Illlinois, so i dont know much about NY. Wish you luck.

Best,

You should build a beta as soon as possible. However, the key is to keep your eyes open and make incremental improvments. Everything becomes clearer when real people start using your application.

One thing you could do that may help you make some revenue quicker is to publish your world in a form compatible with role playing games. You can do the publishing through a company like Lulu. Game rules are actually not copy-writeable, so making a resource for dungeon masters of the game dungeons and dragons is legal and the larger companies even have resources to help you out.

You will need some flavor text, but you could hire that through writers here or on eLance.

Email me through the site and I will get you some samples of others who have done it. Once you sell it through this medium, you will find that many people may want to create other content off of your world. If you wanted to do it on a decent scale, you coudl build a website, get your own ISBN and start a small publishing company. In teh gaming world you will not get rich, but it is a good stepping stone if your world is decent.
