Here are a few techniques to help newly hired employees get acclimated and stay focused:

*Adequate Training

Training is a must for new hires. Tossing new employees in the wind to find their own way is a bad approach to helping new employees become a performing member of the organization.

If not enough introduction is offered it won't be long before new staff members lose focus and probably will end up suffering from lower levels of morale and feelings of inadequacy. This is a lose-lose kind of situation.

*Limit Tasks

A good approach is to introduce new hires to all the tasks they'll be responsible for, but do it slowly. Allow them enough time to learn each piece and then let them build upon that knowledge. This way the new member isn't overwhelmed and is able to effectively absorb the details of the job description they need to learn.

When a person is bombarded with too much information at once, aside from being overwhelmed, information filtering tends to happen and the most important details are not always the ones remembered.

After a general overall introduction, break up the job in tasks and focus on one at a time. This will allow the new employee to learn each piece in detail and will feel confident; this will result in higher levels of being focused.

*Open Door Policy

Employees who feel intimidated and not welcomed to ask questions may simply avoid doing so, and this could lead to a new team member being less focused in their job. It isn't because they don't want to do the tasks associated with the job, but because they don't know how and feel hesitant to ask.

Hi all,

I had a multi-phase approach to teaching new hires.  First and foremost, I had a written procedure manual.  None of this verbal pass on nonsense from one person to the next.  I then had the new hire read through the procedures first.  Later, if they had any questions they could look in the manual.  Nine times out of ten the answer was in the book.

I then had a TRAINING PERSON do the training.    Again, none of this who ever is available crap.  The new hire was assigned to someone who knew the procedures and could actually answer questions.

The new hire then assigned a single task until they became comfortable with the job function.  Then the individual was assigned another task that incorporated the new and old assignments.  The training continued in this manner until the new hire could perform all the job functions.

A perfect example of poor training was a parts center where I worked.  I was assigned to a gentleman who had only four more days on the job than I did.  He had no clue what to do.  Nor could he answer my questions.  This man was assigned to train new hires because the warehouse manager refused to do any training.

Very useful information, thank you for the post.

My strategy to keep my employees focused on work is to make sure that they understand what they need to achieve and give them a reasonable deadline. I think most employers fail to give importance to this. If an employee is lost or confused about their goals, they get easily distracted.

Great post,

So many of the points are simple common sense but its amazing how many of them are completely ignored in the everyday workplace environment.

True. Especially with new employees, they are still lost and don't have the confidence to make decisions on their own because they still lack the experience that is why they should be guided properly. I want to share this article I just read on how important it is to track time to stay focused on the assigned tasks and be able to evaluate productivity.

I agree, training at initial stage is very important for new employees. This will train your employees according to your company's rules and environment.

It is very important for the employer to make sure his employees are focused on work and know their goals. It was hard at first for me at my first workplace, we started to make training at initial stage the last year and the results are fantastic.

Yes you must start slow by teaching and limiting the task and then increase the task one at a time so the new employee will not be under much pressure and will learn to tackle the issues on time..
