You`re not doing anything wrong. WMV is a multimedia format created and supported by Microsoft, but not supported by Apple (Apple prefers that you use its own QuickTime instead).
Your easiest solution is to download the free Flip4Mac, a utility that allows your Mac to use .wmv files. Check out this link
