In an ideal world, we`d all have business raining down on us .... realistically, don`t expect it to happen .... but do what you can to get what you can.

1) Your site has to be optimized for search engines, and for the area you want to service .... SEO, content, inbound links, etc.,  as well as clean/functional coding that search spiders can get through. There are a variety of online tools to use to get a .better look of how effective your site and its coding are.

2) You need a site that, at a glance, looks professional and gets your message across quickly and easily to potential customers to sell your service, and your business. First impressions go a long way, and your content needs to back it up.

3) Build a solid reputation with your current customers .... if possible, give them a few of your business cards, and ask them to pass along your name/number/card if they know someone that could benefit from your service.

one thing you could do is call a bunch of people and ask them to visit the website.

There are several sites that match people requiring web design work with web designers.  How it works is clients post requests and designers respond with bids.  An example is http://www.designquote.net/.  There are several of these sites you could try.

I think independent web designers have a tough road to go.  First of all, there seems to be so many in the industry.  You have to set yourself apart.  How?  Are your websites designed better than others? Do you offer a better price.  Why should I choose you?  Most of all, can I trust you?  Can I feel you have MY best interests in this?  Or are you just someone else that professes to make me a great website and leave me.  I am concerned  most of all, of the trust factor.  If you can establish that kind of feeling with your possible customers, you might see them rain in.  Sitting back waiting won`t work.  Developing that trust factor of your work and what you will do for them, might. :)

Hey Bob,

I`m a website designer/developer myself, and I had to learn a whole new skill set when it came to promoting my business online. The good news is that you are obviously familiar with how websites operate. That being said, webline is exactly right on target with everything he said about building your website to make it more SEO friendly. Good luck, let us know how it all goes.

Thriftymember is right, there are ton`s of lead generation websites out there that will allow more to come to you.  elance.com, guru.com, odesk.com.
I`ve run the networking tour before for my past business.  It can be extremely time consuming - and time is money...eventhough many entrepreneur`s don`t add it up that way.

There`s also a lot of fairly cost effective lead generation companies out there, as I see StartUpNation.com (who I believe works with ResourceNation.com - not sure on that) is promoting free quotes for web design on the right hand side of my screen right now.
SEO can work, but of course it`s so competitive for Web Development (since most SEO companies also do Web Development).

Or, of course you can do some searching to find your own gem.  I know a PPC company that can generate exclusive web development leads for $22-30/lead, and they have a 5% closing rate guarantee (which is extremely unique for lead generation...and a nice assurance).  Although I guess if you don`t close more than that, you also have another issue...your ability to close.  They will only work with those people who buy a minimum of 100-200 leads though.
There`s also email marketers, telemarketers and affiliates out there who will also generate leads on a per lead basis or per sale basis - you just have to find them.

It has become more profitable for me to work as an outsource for other web development firms, although I still have my own clients.  I work 99.9% online through email, IM, netMeeting-type-collaboration tools - I don`t like to meet with clients in person or talk on the phone, unless absolutely necessary.  I understand it makes normal people nervous to do work without `real` contact of some sort - like those people that don`t understand the concept the the clipboard when they cut/copy and paste, I guess.  So having lots of customer testimonials and a solid online prescence is a must.
But be careful, if you are trying build a portfolio, you ususally can`t use the outsourced work you do.  To build a portfolio, you can do some pro bono work for non-profits.

i do logo and business card design and when i am looking for work, i find that the easiest way is to do a google search. for example "i need a logo designed" hit search and usually youll find 4 or 5 blurbs that actually are up to date. i even found this site by doing that process.

just an idea
