I am starting up a new business and need to know that the name I have selected for my company has not already been used.
Other than doing a search on Google, how can I find this out? (is there a free or reasonably priced option)?

most state secretary of state records can be searched for free. Make sure to check for alternate spellings - sound alike names can also be a problem. Your best bet is to hire somebody to do this right.
