I think it depends on what the reporter wants.  In other words, READ and then REREAD the reporters instructions.  If it is a gift guide, keep it simple.   Product description/price/picture/website - send what the reporter requests.

If it is a story, do your research.  Learn everything you can about the reporter and the outlet they are writing for.  Taylor your response to what they are asking for.  It also helps to be able to make a "human" connection in your response.

I do not respond to HARO requests unless I firmly believe I fit what the reporter is looking for. I usually spend a lot of time when I do respond and have had wonderful success.  I have landed a monthly article featuring my business in Inventor`s Digest for next year and another feature that is still in process.

One of the most important things to keep in mind is that you must create "news."  Think not of what`s in it for  you, but what`s in it for the editor or reporter.  They want something new or  informational or entertaining, or any combination of the three.

Also, you must have a well-written press release.  The release must follow a certain format and be written in newspaper style.  If you invented a cure for cancer and called reporters to announce it, the first thing they will tell you is to send a press release.  Nothing happens without one.

Jeff, but what about those Haro requests?

When responding to the anonymous HARO requests I always keep my emails short and to the point - and provide URL links to my blog or blogfolio images or articles that are appropriate to the specific request.  I do include the fact that I have a media kit available upon their request - and several have responded immediately asking me to send one.

HARO is an incredible resource for promoting one`s business.  One resulting article appeared in a print magazine and online last month.  I am currently being interviewed as an expert for a major national business magazine and two books as a result of HARO.  Of course, each such opportunity creates a situation for me to send out my "Toot! Toot!" press releases, too.

Good point, I forgot about sending out press releases when there is something in the works from HARO. I will get right on this.
