I am a retired bookkeeper who would like to start a telecommuting bookkeeping service. With accounting programs (and the data on them) licensed to one computer only, how is the data transferred to the client?  As bookkeeping services are often handled overseas, it must be done some way. Or are they sending reports only? Any advice appreciated. JW

Why not check out some web based accounting software such as Quickbooks Online or Nolapro.  Either of these would help you to have the data up to date in real-time rather than sending a database or report back and forth.  Having the data off-site may also provide better data security in addition to better access for all users.

Hi  JHWhite,

I`m a Virtual Bookkeeper and Assistant who offers bookkeeping to small business and individuals located anywhere. There are various options you can offer to your clients:

The bookkeeping completed on your own computer, and then sending reports to them and a cd with their records.

Quickbooks Online or you could also use Quickbooks Hosting which is where you have the software loaded on to a server on the web that would allow you and your clients to access the same information. For more information and the sites that offer this just search for Quickbooks Hosting.

And you could also directly access your clients computer and use their software using a program such as Log Me In.

Hope this helps....let me know if you have any other questions and I`ll try to answer them for you.

Could anyone please tell me how much is the reasonable hourly rate for bookkeeping services?

I have a bachelor degree in Finance and Technology and have experience in corporate accounting. However, I do not have experience in small business bookkeeping.

I will be completing a quickbooks/bookkeeping course from a state university and will get my certificate.

Any help is appreicated.

The rates I`ve seen lately are in the $30-$40 per hour range.

Thank you.

I saw on National Association of Certified Public Bookkeepers website that the entry level bookkeeper gets $20-30/hr and full-charge certified bookkeeper is $30-40.

I don`t know how reputable NACPB is. Anybody heard of them??
