Vince recently posted about his vacation and it got me to thinking what I would do.

I thought that I would find out how other`s that have a home based business take a vacation without affecting their business. Especially when you are in the early stages.

Although I am not planning a vacation at this time as orders get steadier and we are getting busier I would find it difficult to take a week off.

How have you managed to take time off without losing customer orders?

Pack and go.  Oh, and tell hubby he can call you any time he needs to vent about being overworked, just not during nap time or happy hour.

What about closing down your contact points, like the e-commerce site? I`ve actually seen sites with a posted notice: We will be closed for the week of ##-##. Your order will be shipped within X days of (date).

Would that work?

Hi Kathy,

I`m not going on vacation anytime soon, but I too, wondered how I would be able to take care of my orders if I were to go on vacation.  Usually, I ship out the very next day after my customer places an order. But if I`m not at home, I wouldn`t be able to provide the fast delivery as promised.

So I was thinking, I would probably offer a good discount for customer`s ordering the week I`m gone. I would probably tell them, orders will only be processed after this date.  As a way of thanking my customers for their kind patience, I would offer them a discount. That way, I can go on vacation without worrying and my customers can get the discount. We both win.

Would that be a good idea? I`m curious to find out what others think of this.

Jeannie

Really great comments

Jeannie- I too like having a fast turnround. Since we make signal flags and package and ship them all ourselves if I were to leave for a week it could take awhile to get caught up. Also when you are a new business whether the order is large or small you really want to stay on top of things. I am getting orders on a daily basis and can`t imagine being without a computer at this point. A discount might work.

Vince took his laptop and here is the link

MNGrillGuy- That sounds like a good idea. I think that I will do that

CraigL: I too have seen signts do that. I am not big on the idea if you are a start-up. If you have been in business awhile I could see how it could work. At the beginning when you are trying to get customers to come to your website I would think that you might lose alot of orders.

Nikole- I could really see how a laptop would help.

Thanks for the idea`s and keep them coming.
Kathy

Sometimes you have to sort of force yourself... you can even go somewhere local ... say 150-200 miles... with internet access so you can keep in touch and aprised. It`s just so easy to put off taking time for yourself. You aren`t too far from the Great Lakes are you? Have you ever been to Madeline Island? There are stacks of nice places along the west coast of Lake Michigan.

CookieMonster- I could see the need for that. Local would be a great option. I am about 40 miles west of Chicago. No, I haven`t been to Madeline Island. Is that in Indiana or Michigan?

Now if I could only get Craigl away from the computer I might stand a chance.LOL
