HI JJ,

First, I like Chinese products in fact I have a few in my house. From an electric water heater up to a few frying pans and wok in the kitchen. I haven't been to China so I really can't answer yours second question.

We know that some Chinese product especially those coming from the mainland have gained notoriety in some part of the world. I remember watching CNN about a milk brand in China that contains a compound use for making glue. Although I am not saying that all Chinese brand is not safe for purchase (because both water heater and my wok are still reliable), that kind of mileage can really hurt a product or in this case import goods.

I have a supplier of corporate giveaways and most of his items all came from China. Some of them were defective but most of them are of good quality.
