I believe I have an excellent idea for a new business or I could even link it to an already established company. As a single mum I can recieve some assistance through centrlink. Before I go approaching anyone I would like to know how to protect my Idea incase it really takes off!! Also any other advice re funding etc. would be appreciated as I have no capital.

You should not reveal your idea to anyone until you setup your business and it would be better that you run your business with yourself instead taking the help of business broker. In that case, you can easily protect your ideas...

There are two ways to patent a new idea:

1. Do it yourself (see this post:  http://patentfile.org/how-to-patent-an-idea/)

2. Hire an attorney or agent to do it for you (see USPTO list:  https://oedci.uspto.gov/OEDCI/query.jsp)

The cost to patent an idea can vary greatly and is spread out over time.  Here is a good timeline showing these costs:  http://patentfile.org/howmuchdoesitcosttopatentanidea/

As they say an idea alone isn't enough to start a business. Aside from an idea you must have a plan and most importantly funds. Remember everyone has an idea for a business is what you do to that idea what counts. Put it into action before others will.
