I want to add a "login" feature to my website, that consists of an email address, password and a unique user ID. The feature should also be able to store the names, send an email verification reply, provide for emailing the user for forgotten passwords, etc.

The website was developed with FrontPage 2003. Does anyone know if there are precoded routines available to accomplish this? If not precoded or free code, what would be the recommended approach (code, database, etc.) Thanks in advance.

RP,
Adding a Login to your web site means setting up a database, and taking the time to do the scripting. I don`t know if there are any free codes available since, every login serves its purpose. My question to you is? What is the purpose of the Login? What is it that you are trying to accomplish? Example: I come to your web site, and login, whats on the other side of the site once I log in? What information am I accessing? What is so important that you need a  login?
I can help you if you wish, the only thing is; I am a coldfusion developer and have created various Logins... here goto this example: http://www.cdl-branch.com
and click on Login.. This Login work in sessions, meaning once you log in, it gives you a warm greeting like :Welcome RP, thank you for accessing our secured pages: then they have their tools.. Also once you log out it Kills the session. meaning, you can`t just hit the back button, it makes you log back in.
Let me know if I can be of help

I`ve used jpmaster77`s Login_System_v.2.0 in the past with success.  I can`t find a direct link to the zip file but here is the tutorial.

I can email you the zip if you want.

Hi RP

This is putting the cart before the horse. If a client asked me write this my first questions would why? What are you trying to achieve? Password protected content? Forums? Mailing list registration? Other? Once you answer that then you can build a registration system to support your objective.

I greatly appreciate the suggestions and I truly thank all for your responses and comments. I am not sure why I have to explain why I want the Login feature, but I have no problem  and will explain.

I have an informational and support website, targeted at a very specific group, that I have been developing over the past year. Through diligent promoting and using input from members of SUN, I have been able to grow the traffic to 3000+ unique vists per day. As part of the sites planned growth I will be adding a newsletter, a chat forum, and incorporating serveral searchable databases. Each database will contain in excess of 200k entries, which I hope to convert a percentage of to paying advertisers. I feel I should have a database of users to email notices to that will enhance sales of advertiser`s products and further promote the website. That is why I want a Login feature to capture the email addresses. Again, thanks for your responses and I look forward to more.

PS. Hostclick, I looked into the jpmaster77`s Login_System_v.2.0. It looks like something I could use, and want to explore it further. Nuevolution, I don`t know if coldfusion will give me a problem with my hosting site, but I am going to investigate.

Not knowing the situation with your current site, how much data you have and all, but there are quite a few open-source content management systems that either come with or easily allow you to add functions like site logins (with specific content visible for logged-in or registered users), forums, newsletters and the like.  this would require a database on the server.

Hi RP

Login systems aren`t something that just bolt on to a website. While they all contain the same basic screens (registration, login, logout, password recovery) it`s what happens behind the scenes them that matters. This is driven by what you want to do. For example: You wouldn`t install login system X if users then had to register a second time to use your forums because it didn`t create accounts in software Y.

I think inkwire`s suggestion of using a content management system is a good one. I can recommend Drupal (www.durpal.org) as a good general purpopse CMS that has lots of modules supporting forums, mailing lists, etc. [Note: The Drupal website is a bad example of what you can do with it.]
