I own an Information Technology support company in NYC.  I was thinking of targeting new businesses.  I was wondering how some of you found your computer support firm?  The obvious answer is word of mouth, which seems to be the main way.  The problem is that not everyone has good IT support, so their recommendation might not be the best.  I am looking to see if this market is a viable target.  Thank you in advance for your input.

Well, it`s probably not what you want to hear, but word of mouth is the way we found ours. Actually, word of mouth through a tech-based business association we belong to.

Hope that helps in some way.

Hi Kacey,

My company helps technology consulting firms like INTERLINK TECHNOLOGIES get more of the best, steady, high-paying consulting clients.

For your situation, I`d strongly recommend the following results-oriented marketing mix:

1> Business related organizations
2> B2B focused trade shows/expos
3> Sponsoring your own seminars
4> Speaking at organizations` meetings
5> Networking with other trusted business advisors/influencers
6> Rigorous follow-up with your prospects

You can sign-up for free computer consulting marketing tips at our Web site at http://www.computerconsultingkit.net
By doing so, you`ll also get invited to one of our upcoming free Webinars, which I think you`ll really enjoy.

Hi Kacey,

Great question.   The answer might not be that difficult.

In many ways, the process of locating an IT support firm is no different than acquiring any other product or service.

If a water pipe in your house broke in the middle of the night and you needed a plumber ASAP, what would YOU do?   Would you call a neighbor and ask for a referral?  Probably not.....

If you required brain surgery, would you attend a medical seminar, or seek some other authority?

If you wanted to get a new car, how would you go about researching your options?  Once you picked your desired model, how would you go about getting competitive Quotes?

Hmmmmmm, are you beginning to notice a trend in all of these approaches?

Kacey,

Why don`t you ask to your current client base for referrals, if you like the word of mouth method.  All of Joshua`s ideas are great, but there needs to be a balance.  Your time is valuable.  The first question I would ask you is, "What do you think is your target market?"

Location?
What are some your best clients?
What are some clients that your competition has?

As Jim was implying in his post, "where do your prospects look for the service that you provide?"  Probably the Internet.  Boost up your web presence to get in front of those buyers.

Sometimes that is not good enough, you don`t want to wait on buyers.  So you may need to be interruptive: Get a Targeted Marketing List; make sales calls or hire a firm to do it for you; use direct mail to get your message in front of decision makers; get an targeted email list (beware there is a lot of junk out there)

I am not sure if you have a marketing plan or not, but you need one.

Good Luck.

It seems many IT companies are found through referrals or a search engine, but web management in particular may be hard to find if your looking solely on the internet.

SEO is the center of everyone's focus these days to get noticed, but it's more likely you will come across a company that provides the specific services you're looking for if you ask around.

The reason for this is many websites aren't optimized with enough variations of keywords like most large companies' are. Nevertheless, still keep on searching online. Use different combinations of keywords. Perhaps search for "web hosting" or "web hosting services" or "hosted web services."

We're based in Boston with offices in Palo Alto, CA and we provide web hosting, so feel free to check out the site.  www.nskinc.com

I would say a strong SEO presence will give you the back-links the search engines love, and coupled with a decent website, will net at least a trickle of calls which will spearhead the initial growth. Our website is relatively new and incomplete, but feel free to check it out.
