The above link is step 9 in the StartUp Nation Book and talks about Brand Names. I was curious how some of you came up with the names of either your product or the name of your company.
IB Designs USA came about during a brainstorming session. The IB is actually short for Infinity and Beyond. The Design is because of designing the office chair slipcovers. The USA I added when I went for my domain name and saw that IB Designs was taken.
I think it would be interesting to see how some of you came up with the names that you did

I have started a number of cmpanies, and took inspiration from may sources:

My family`s names, focuses for business, my life on the internet, as well as a plethora of others.   I think so long as the name is memorable and/or focused, with a good logo and a bit of PR, the sky`s the limit!

BTW, I like the way you got your company name... unique.

I have created a few names over the years. My best friend is a thesarus. I get an idea for a name that I am not too keen on and play around with a thesarus and find other meanings for the name that I came up with. Imagery magic came from a name I came up with years ago... Visual illusions. This name I came up with for a friend of mine who was going to go into business selling those optical illusion posters, but that never got off the ground. After about three or four other names, I started playing around with this name and ran it up the flag pole to see how many saluted. Seemed to work, so I ran with it.

Thanks Rojgiean ! The more that I use it the more that I like it. Your suggestions are great and I agree that it has to be memorable also.
Engraver I really like your ideas also. I like the name Imagery Magic because of where it could lead too.
I have been trying to think of a name other than ` slipcovers ` . I don`t want anything flashy or cute as I see the direction of my business more as a boutique type of business and not mass merchandising. I thought of a IB Designs Original. I am open to any suggestions.

For my business/brand name, I went through a process of thinking of words that projected the image I wanted for my business...one that I thought would attract customers.  Once I came up with one that I liked, I immediately checked to see if it was available as a website.  This process yielded one name that I liked and was going with until....

I was listening to a song from a musical I love and they used the word "winsome" in the lyrics.  I had a general idea of what the word meant, but to be sure, I had a look in the dictionary - "charming with an innocent-like quality."  I thought it was a perfect expression of myself as well as being elegant and not too "wedding-like" or "event-like." So far, it has been well-received!

Slipcovers:

Dustcovers, Skins, Coverings, Designs, Furniture Tattoos, lol... I`ve heard them called all sort of names -- I think because my wife is originally from Great Britain..ha

I love thinking of new approaches, if you`re a bit more specific in what your looking for, I`ll see what I can do for ya, Kathy

Wishing you the best in your endeavour!

I wanted to project an image of success and fluency in my work, thus a more "seasoned" name was chosen for my lead company (which I have allowed to slide recently...let my ".com" lapse...bad me!), Platinum Ventures International.  I then thought that I needed a slogan that would help dentify my main focus of helping Entrperneurs and business owners in their quest to help create a brighter future for us all.  I came up with "Creating Tomorrow Today!" -- and it stuck.  I had barely marketed my company two days when I got three different orders for logo creation, company/corporate identity, and business plan and focus assistance.  I`ve not bothered looking back, ever since.

I`ve become a little sluggish in my responsibilities as of late due to totalling a car (snaped a phone pole in half, and took out ten yards of horse plank fencing), Having oral surgery (three teeth removed, and stitches), and moving to a new house (a lot of work in fixing up and settling in)... but now that I`m over my slump, I`m looking at regaining my perspective, and "relaunching my full spectrum of services!

I`ve always been hard-headed, so I`ve started a consulting company, and was tring to think of a good name for it.  I ended up with two...lol

The resulting companies were: Trenchant Financial Services and Temerarious Marketing (Both Registered currently in Kentucky)...lol

My Financial Style: Trenchant by definition is "1. Forceful, effective, and vigorous, 2. Caustic; cutting, 3. Disctinct" -- All of which I believe fit the way I approach business as awhole, and finances more specifically.  I love taking things that are complex, and finding simplified ways to explain them, so that the most complex prcesses can be explained in the most simplified way, to help even out the "playing-field" for all entrepreneurs and business peoples!

My Marketing Style: Temerarious by definition is "1. presumptuously daring, 2. presumptuously forward, 3. recklessly bold" -- I think all those fit my style... Blazing new paths showing little regaurd in the "tried and true" methods... just finding new things that work, and going with them, without looking back!

I want a name that is easy to remember but also exemplifies the uniqueness and one of a kind slipcover. I can custom make them from a digital photograph and a few measurements. I know that there is nothing wrong with calling them slipcover`s.
I am including a link to my `About Me Page` on eBay. There  is only a couple places on the internet that even do office chair covers. Alot more companies slipcover couches and loveseats . I think that is why I want a different name. Sears has what they call SureFit whic describes what they sell as an example.
Thanks for the encourgement and I wish you the best of luck also.
Thanks for your input

Kathy -

Great thread!  It`s interesting to read about the process others have gone through.

For 30 years I`ve helped clients come up with business names, identities, and branding strategies.  However, coming up with my own was one of the most difficult for me.  Here`s the story:  LogoMotives Evolution

I`m getting ready to celebrate my oldest daughter`s birthday, so I`ll be gone for a bit today.  I`ll work up some ideas, and contact you back

Until then, keep it real, and "Good Luck"  haha
