It is a fact that we hire individuals that are authorities in their industry. We are willing to throw our money at them, almost effortlessly.

An effective way to build your authority is to take the opportunities to share your knowledge. You can do this by being a guest speaker, contribute your content to other websites or blogs, and provide your services for free.

Guest Speaking

Guest Speaking - MicrophoneMany people would rather amputate a body part than speak in front of a group of people. I am humble enough to tell you that I am one of those people. I am not yet comfortable with speaking to a group over 20 people.

Did you notice the word “yet”?

The only way to get over the nervousness and anxiety is to practice.

You can start small by volunteering to speak at your local chamber of commerce, workshops, networking meetings, or any type of public event to help you with getting more comfortable with public speaking.

If the thought of you speaking in pubic makes you want to pass out, do not panic. There are options available for your voice to be heard in public.

You can host a weekly podcast series and interview experts related to your industry.

Interviewing experts is an easy way to earn points with your online presence, because whomever you interview already has a following.

All you have to do is ask.

The majority will most likely say yes, especially if you stress your willingness to work around their schedule.

Volunteer Your Expertise

Volunteer Your ExpertiseThis third tip may be challenging for you, especially if you are a new business owner. You do not have to charge people a fee every time they need your assistance.

Trust me on this.

If you are truly passionate about what you do, then money should never be an issue.

Successful entrepreneurs generously provide valuable information. They do so without being concerned about how much money they will make from sharing their success secrets.

The easiest way to volunteer your expertise and success secrets is by sharing your original content.

Contribute Your Original Content

Sharing original content is an effective technique to raise your authority to expert status.

You can contribute your articles to an unlimited resource, the internet.

There are plenty of article directories to submit your original articles. Every article you contribute will appear in the most popular search engines.

Having your name and your brand displayed in the top search engines easily builds your credibility. Contribute Your Original Content

You can even submit your articles to several business websites that encourage entrepreneurs like you, to promote valuable information.

Always give your expertise on the blogs and sites you visit on a regular basis.

Since you will be contributing your expertise on several different blogs, it is best to stay organized.

Create an editorial calendar to help keep track of relevant topics that will be published on your blog. You can also use a calendar to track where and when you make content contributions online.

Another place to contribute your content and expertise is in relevant online communities. A rule of thumb is to contribute to communities that you genuinely enjoy.

You can join online communities outside of the business industry.

The options are endless for you.

Oh, by the way, sharing your content does NOT give you a license to spam. That really pisses people off because it seems as if your motive is only to blast your business. Doing so is guaranteed to have a negative effect on building a reputable online presence.

It is okay to promote your business but do it respectively. Follow the rules and regulations of the communities you join.

In conclusion, the three suggestions above should help you climb the “online presence” ladder.

Raising your authority does not have to be a challenge. You just have to be willing to step up and show the world how valuable you are.

Another wonderful post, Stacie! I can personally attest to Guest Speaking and Volunteering as a means to building credibility and establishing yourself as an expert. Since my business is B2B, I identified organizations in my region that provide assistance to businesses (financial planning, mentorship, etc.) and I offered to give Social Media seminars for free. It was a win-win-win because all parties are gaining value!

Blogging is another big one, though you absolutely have to be consistent to make a splash. There are so many people out there claiming to be experts. What I'm sure you realize is that expert-status is achieved through frequency. Do you trust the doc who's performed 2 surgeries or one who's done over 100? Same thing for bloggers. I tend to trust bloggers that have 100s of articles.

Really want to stand out? One word, YouTube! Start producing your own videos and watch your credibility, expertise, and celebrity status go up! Again, consistency is king so set a goal of doing 5 to 10 short videos a month and you'll undoubtedly surpass your competitors!
