Rich, noting of course, I’m just a simple taco maker, and only checked Alexa (a site I’m not keen on) after someone’s post, like this topic, struck a cord with vague feelings of my own about community/nation, I’m glad to grok and puke (as I have done in the past) … I feel fortunate to participate in this groupspeak and know anything offered will be accepted for what it is (and really hasn`t any value).
I’d think if your lurkers are as a numerous percentage of unique to active members, then there is fantastic opportunity to innovate (over and over) and fan a hot bed of coals into an inferno; you have the means and ability to make a significant difference in peoples lives; but there’s reasons why packs of hungry hounds are nipping at your heels and why your site counts are what they are today; you can’t be all things but you must do some things great; and your community lives or dies regardless of anything you actually “do”.
I’d like to think social media is about empowering community and people, but most often it’s about commoditizing the space and profiting from your own kind (product elevator pitchers are the most heinous in my cannibal nation) -- not that there’s anything wrong with it!~) We all must turn a buck, and I’m all down with selling more tacos, but imho there’s something not quite thar’ here today in this whole mix; a vague disconnect between what’s pushed and what’s being pulled (and what`s really the point/value anyway!~)Taco-sauce aside, to Craig’s list I’d add the ability to award “karma points” to both posters and topics (creates scan/searchable index values); a SunWiki for the major topics we all (well, those of us lacking the means to “hire the best”) need/reference to make decisions and other popular/topical topics; and maybe leverage your existing base of active users into “Wallyworld Greeters” to make the newbie feel more accepted/confident (or whatever anti-psycho trait driving lurkers’ silence). [site rankings: popularity isn`t health, lurkers don`t index, and ents. are uniquely valuable in funny ways]
