How many active (posting and/or reading at least once a month) SUN members are there?

I don`t know Doormat.  Probably someone from Sun could tell you more from there stats.  But it seems like we`ve lost a few active posters.  Where are you guys????  We miss you!

I think there`s somewhere between ten and a thousand, but I`d have to go back and count. Lemme put that on my to-do list, and get back to you on that.

Oh...and don`t forget the members of StagNation, none of whom are very active!

to give you a sense, 30% of people using the site are "regulars," returning month after month. you don`t see them posting b/c most people are readers (aka "lurkers").
as of this month, about 150,000 unique people visit the site (many doing so multiple times) monthly.

What`s the definition of "plenty"?
Quality vs quantity aside, I agree with someone`s resent post about why SuN is dropping like a lead balloon in "rankings" ... I read four topics before this one: 1 was "spam" by the same guy constantly going on about his writings to drive his site traffic, 1 was off the wall, and the other 2 didn`t provide enough details (if you`re selling great on the web and want to get into retail, don`t you think it`s a good idea to list your site) to provide anything intelligent back (ah, as if I could, but at least give me something to swing at!~)

TigerTaco,

while i was unaware that rankings are dropping, our traffic is up considerably and growing every month.

what do you recommend we do to increase the quality of posts. now THAT`s something i`m really interested in learning. always open to suggestions...

Rich,

That`s an amazing amount of traffic.  I don`t think you can control the "quality" of posts, with the number of people you attract to this site.  People just say,.. what they do. But I do think you have done a pretty good job, of keeping spam off this site. And I`m sure all the lurkers, enjoy all their reading. :)

Actually, I have a couple of thoughts on making this better. For a site that`s not only this visible, but also as important to the emerging need (necessity?) for a return to entrepreneurial lifestyles, the forum is very important. I don`t know if there`s a dedicated FTE assigned to it, but if not, it`d be a huge benefit.
  • Manually create summaries that can be searched, of topics going more than 1 page
  • Monitor and arbitrate problem threads (spam and commercial advertising)
  • Act as a consolidation and indexing manager, again for better searching.
  • Introduce tagging
  • In some way, form a cross-reference to the many blogs in the "other" dimension of SuN.
From the git-go, the search function on the forums has been pretty miserable. I say this because of the many times I`ve tried to find even my own topics and couldn`t. When I did eventually find them, I couldn`t make sense out of how the searching is taking place.

If a topic drops off the main Community home, and I miss it, then it pretty much can`t be found except by accident or by scrolling through every single posting in every forum. There ought to be a way to extract ALL topics posted within "X" number of days previous. The problem is not visiting the forums for say, a week or two, then trying to "catch up."

We have an unbelievable archive of resources here in the forums, little of which can quickly be found in an organized fashion. With hyperlinking and grouping, I think it could become as functional as Wikipedia.

The podcasts are an excellent cross-connection resource, and they`re even harder to find in a specific or particular way. The summaries don`t do justice to them, so maybe they could use electronic transcription; I dunno.

craig,

you`re so committed to our community - it really shines through.

i will discuss all of your points with our team internally and reach back out to you with how we can integrate/use them to improve the forums and the site in general.

i welcome other ideas and reactions from others, too. tigertaco - it appears that you`re monitoring how our site ranks and it suggests you`re savvy to best practices and how to improve ranking... would love to know your thoughts...
