Agree or not, SEO is the one most important factor in the success of any website. Now, there is on page and off page optimization that must be taken into consideration. One is incomplete without the other. Nobody knows how and when there website is ranked high in the search engines and suddenly the next day, it drops, out of sight! To be sure that you keep getting constant chunk of traffic everyday, focus on search engine optimization.

I would have to disagree with the statement "SEO is the one most important factor in the success of any website". In my experience some websites benefit much more for other marketing options.

For example in some cases Pay Per Click would be a better option to advertise for irregular or one off events, SEO can be wasted for a quick result. Another example would be self improvement sites, which can obviously benefit from SEO but affliate marketing and social media can be much more successful to catch people. Some markets have hardly any searches worth optimising for, so why waste a budget? There are many instances where SEO is not the logical option.

I would be comfortable in saying that SEO is the most common option for marketing online, but the best option for a business depends on many factors.

In my experience, having a basic understanding of core SEO principles is a must. You don't know what kind of traffic you're missing (or getting) until it's there (or gone).

Search engine marketing, or SEM, is a form of Internet marketing that seeks to promote websites by increasing their visibility in search engine result pages (SERPs) through the use of paid placement, contextual advertising, and paid inclusion.[1]. The industry peak body Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) founded by Barbara Coll in 2003, includes search engine optimization (SEO) within its reporting, and SEO is also included in the industry definitions of SEM by Forrester Research, eMarketer, Search Engine Watch, and industry expert Danny Sullivan.[2]. The New York Times defines SEM as 'the practice of buying paid search listings'.[3][4]

Do not agree that SEO is most important factor. What you write or sell on your site is more important.  Search engines index your site based on contents. My website Skill-guru

because of contents. SEO is and important factor as to how you should write your contents.

Google has stated that 19 out of 20 payperclicks come from within the content network - ie. Adsense.

What this means is that about 19 out of 20 websites are not found through going to Google.com and typing in a keyphrase - they are found through interuptive marketing - ie.  on a website about outdoor sports a seller of nutrition basrs advertises his site.

People are spending a lot more time hanging out on Facebook and other sites they enjoy.  They find new sites not through the search engines 95% of the time, but through recommendation.

SEO can be valuable for some niches.  For others it's a waste of effort.

I say this not in ignorance.  I know a lot about SEO and that's where I started my marketing career.  As I learned more about the weaknesses and liabilities of SEO as an advertising method I came to disagree with the hypothosis that it is "the best way" to advertise online.    It's just not.

SEO is definitely important.  Here are my favorite SEO tips:

1) HTML filenames should always contain the appropriate keywords for your website

2)  Always use geographic references in your Title tag and content (what city, state, county are you in)

3) Text links are better than graphic links since Google can read the text links and may not be able to read the graphic links

SEO is cruical to every business online! I strongly believe that without it...the success of your biz will tumble down hill. Especially with the economy these days, online sales have increased and steadily inclined throughout the years.

SEO is important for obvious reason, every brand is competing for each keywords and one of these brands can be your competitor. So given that it is important to have at least a background how SEO works.

I agree with Mark (MalinaInk), SEO may be an important tool but at the end of the day its all about good customer service, a happy client and a working product.
