I`m curious to know why Startup Nation won`t build their community forum on an online platform like vBulletin which is fare more robust than what we currently have?

Selfishly, I`d love to see that!  My site uses VBulletin and it`s much more user friendly (and I can find my way around).

But, then, there might be something even better in the works at SuN!!!

Dear Dean,

Does vBulletin have the rating system and easy e-mail access that this one does?  I do a lot of posts on http://www.small-business-forum.com/ and have found that I like this sets up a better because it seems more personal.

What are your thoughts about http://www.small-business-forum.com/ and where you normally post?

It sure does. In fact, that forum IS hosted on VB--just look at the footer

I`m on this forum from time to time; http://forums.digitalpoint.com/ . It`s mostly for internet and web professionals but it`s hosted on VB.

VB offers a more robust rating system along with comments as well. Based on the digital point forum, it also offers a ebay-like positive feedback system if you do business with other members. For example, if SUN ever decided to have a marketplace forum whereby members could buy and sell with each other, you could give feedback [negative or positive] about the other member. Here is what their feedback system looks like for someone; . They call it iTrader

All of the major online communities are managed with VB. The license is $175/year.

A couple other major web communities which are hosted on VB;

http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/index.php?

Thanks for that link as I`ve never heard of that forum. I gave you some rep.

Sir Richard... er... Erik ,

The forum that you referred to also uses VBulletin.  It`s a very popular format.

Or you can use phpBB, which is free and very customizable. I love it.

Wow, I hope that never happens here.
As a simple user, that has no idea what goes on in a server, I find these sites a graphics nightmare. I feel like I`m trapped in an endless excel spread sheet.

Several sites in my industry have used the free phpBB and been hacked recently by internet terrorists (my term for them) and all their info was erased.  It was a disaster for these online communities.  Apparently, free also means "unprotected" to a certain degree.

Well, the system administrator should be the one who takes care of the security. So, I suggest that they get a better admin person.
