Be careful as you hire. You might benefit from a service such as ours that helps hire, train, and support sales people. Only 5% of salespeople do most of the selling. Most are mediocre going from one job to another. Look for a vaifiable track record. Question why they left their previous job and be prepared for liars and exaggerators. They are common in sales. Check references carefully amd see if they can back up their claims. Product knowledge is not as important as people knowledge. It helps if they are a good prospector, cold caller, and networker. It`s great if they are organized. But be careful of the sizzle. A good saleperson will be able to sell themselves. A great sles person will catch your vision and passion and make it their own. Just make sure the substance lives up to the hype. You may have to go through a few before you find a gem.

Since you know your product better than anyone else,  it`s important that you share your excitement and enthusiasm with your seller.  You have to also find a way to "stack their deck".  I did outside sales for many years and trained literally hundreds of people.  You have to provide a simple system for them to follow i.e.
 -introduction
-short story(k.i.s.s.-keep it short & simple)
-presentation of product
-price
-close
-rehash w/2nd product.

One suggestion is to find a certain geographical area and saturate the market with the pillow you are promoting.  Be reasonable with your commissions.  Door to door sales reps will move more merchandise if the comm. is good.  It may be in your best interest to hire someone that has a strong background in outdoor sales with a "do whatever it takes" attitude.  If they also have a pleasing personality, they may be able to help you make quick strides.  Develop a simple sales pitch, screen your candidates, and you may be able to duplicate the process quickly.  You may even move your products faster than you can manufacture them!  Wish you good luck!

Olive-
I sell candles and am a distributor  through Mia Bella.  Here is my website to take a look at www.angeli.scent-team.com.  I suggest taking a look at all the spas,  massage therapy parlors, and ect.  That deal in aroma therapy and relaxation techniques. Just to help your employees out in there sales for you.    Now for the way the employees Represent your company.  Do your research of how the telemarketers call people you do not want to do that to your customers.  Also set a hard quality guideline for your employees.   So they are not saying things to harm your company.  I work for a company Called N.E.W.  We set up Service appointments for Best Buy. We deal in customer contact everyday but not the sales part.  Be very careful because how they handle your sales is going to make or break you.  Also just take a gander at my website to see how a website really looks so you can get sales by just individuals looking around. Good luck Olive!!!!

Hello.

A lot of good advice.

Let me add that a website could work wonders for your startup and future.

One thing it would add is the language (verbage) in how you describe your business, product etc.  Not only would that provide information to potential customers, but it would get your sales people on the same page as you which also adds to your success.  Getting your sales people on the same page is crucial.  Many companies have failed because their sales force had loose cannons especially when they were not provided the script and offered more than what the company could deliver.

The other thing you could add are video clip presentations of various users of your product to say how wonderful it is and how they can`t live without it. They didn`t know what `unwind` meant until they tried your pillow.   To see an example of  a video player that plays multiple video clips using an RSS feed, take a look at this video player. There are links to other players on that page, also.

It isn`t difficult at all to add an eCommerce application even to a 1-page site as you could use PayPal `Add to Cart` feature.  If you want to take a look at an example, look at the website `CavsMakingHistory.com`. In this case, the 67-year old "Rappin` Grandpa" created the main graphic and then the graphic was converted into a web page using various coding techniques to add the button graphics and PayPal and other links on top of the graphic.  Even the E-mail links on the graphic are `active`!

Doing it this way made it much more affordable.

There are many ways to get things done within a specified budget -- it may not have all of the bells and whistles that you may want, but it can get your point across. Getting your page hosted with great support is affordable also.

Also what I`d suggest is that you add a form field that asks visitors how they found out about your product and website.  It accomplishes 2 major objectives: 1) provides you with marketing data and 2) your sales folks will be able to refer their prospects to your website knowing that they will receive credit for their sale.

HTH
