High School Students in South Eastern Michigan have an opportunity to win an Apple i-Pod (80 Gb Video) by writing an essay on the topic of "How Entrepreneurs Shaped Our American Community".  It is a fun way in which we can help our young people understand the importance of entrepreneurship, responsibility, and business ownership.  The essay contest is being held in conjunction with the Tri-County Community Expo at Freedom Hill County Park in Sterling Heights, Michigan, an event designed to help encourage entrepreneurship and innovation in our struggling Michigan economy.  More information can be found on the event web site at www.tcce.biz.

I actually really like the idea of starting a business now being a career choice. I have been battling with the idea for years because I have always believed in entrepreneurship. However, much like myself, lots of us come from backgrounds where our parent (s) worked a regular job, and was lucky if they got a 9am-5pm schedule.

My mom has been working with an airline for 13 years and I cringe to think of working for anyone that long. Why? Well, you figure that business are in business to make money. While she stayed put getting paid a SMALL hourly wage, big wigs/owners are able to do things like send their children to college (she couldn`t), have a reliable car (she`s never had a reliable car), and of course, save and invest (she has a little 401k account but it is THE account for every little emergency).

This is a huge chunk of your life to give to some job only to still be part of the low income bracket after almost 15 years!

I`d like to see a forum topic devoted to high-school kids, where they can post questions about projects, essays, and assignments. We`ve got this group, at the moment, doing the virtual sporting goods store, and they could use some help. I think with a particular topic set up for kids like this, it`d be a way for older enterpreneurs to help out.

Most importantly, it`d help younger people get excited about the whole idea of starting and running a business. :-)
