I have always heard that selling fireworks is a high margin business.

Also, selling software of your own creation would be a very high margin business if you could come up with something people would pay for and market it effectively (and protect it from pirates).

Basically anything (and I really do mean *anything* - as long as it is legal) that helps busy people save time - from dog walking or lawn mowing to personal assistant/planner/shopper...
Bearing in mind that quite often, those who make a good living have no time left to get a life .

Advantages:
- No funding (all you need to invest is your time and possibly a few bucks for gas)
- No marketing costs (WoM),
- No need to have a PhD,
- And if you can build your brand around a concept: unlimited franchising potential...

I think the initial question was highest profit margin? That would be any business with low overhead (home based), low materials cost (anything on the web), and low marketing costs (anything on the web if you know how to do it). So my answer would be, anything you can create and sell online. If you create logos for instance (and you have the necessary software already) and sell them for $75, that`s virtually $75 profit, no overhead (hosting excepted).

vapourlock,

I`ll take those two cents and put them with the rest of the pennies I`m collecting from this community.

We`ve got the plan started and written - with daily revisions. For the record, we`re based in the States - we would like to find some freelance writers with an emphasis on the FREE. Our "niche" would be the Native American view. I`m also looking to find someone who could provide an outsider`s view of all things Native.

We are in the planning stages right now but if you would like to get in touch with me regarding your inexpensive rates. . . feel free to drop me a line at native-legacy-magazine@googlegroups.com.

I would have to say vending...especially since I am in vending.  The start up costs for the machines can be large, depending on if you wish to purchase new equipment or used...but the actual profit margin is huge.  I pay 15 cents for water that I sell for 1.00.

Any extremely lucrative business has a mark up of roughly 200-400%. That is the way America works. But you need to show VALUE with that product. Making money in this industry is about conveying value. Value in the products, system to make sales , and the compensation plan.  I haven`t had a JOB in 5 years and never will because I get what it takes to be a successful entrepreneur.  Just keep these things in mine. And you usually get what you pay for.

NO business that costs less than a couple thousand dollars to start is worth it.  Like a carpenter needs tools in his tool belt you will need tools such as systems, advertising, and product. If you dont have that to do then you should wait until you have the capital to properly start a business. Thankfully I have all that with Global Resorts Network.

Oddly enough, I have a non-profit that would benefit from the online-only option I am considering. . . but first things first, I need to get the bills paid and my debt reduced. . . Maybe I can ask congress for a little help? I mean I am teetering on the brink of a financial disaster - maybe I should call my congressional representative or perhaps one of the senators for some help? Do you think that would work? ? ? . In any event - that e-zine/treekiller mag idea is still on the stove - i`ve just put it on the back-burner for now. . . but I will definitely keep yourself and Vapour in mind for possible contributors. . . I`ll keep you posted. .

ask hank paulson for help - though since he doesnt own any shares in your business it might be a long shot.
but on a serious note - i agree with passive residual income.  how do you measure that over time?  this usually applies to online ventures but like  grnold school suggested you must demonstrate your expertise (who u r), the value you bring to the table and the ongoing presence/support expected from you.

people will pay for these comforts & peace of mind!
