Dking,

A quick trip to the dictionary will reveal to you that passion IS emotion. So, I`m not sure where your apples and oranges are coming from.

Otherwise, I think you pretty much parroted what I wrote. Balance is critical.

But statements like nikole`s "Don`t get emotionally attached to the project" reveal a certain lack of understanding about human nature. And my point is that being emotionally involved is not necessarily a bad thing, and in some cases can be the driving force behind some very unconventional but successful ventures.

Thank you very much PK... How can you not be emotionally attached to your own business? It`s your Business, if you don`t believe in it, who will?

You can get attached to the business, just don`t get attached to the product.

A (now) very rich inventor told me a story of how she blew millions invested in this product that never came to market because she was so in love with the idea she wasn`t looking at the feasibility of it and potential market for it. After that experience left her drained and depressed, sh vowed never again to get so emotionally attached to an invention. She went on to sell many more inventions that she was passionate about, but that she wasn`t emotionally attached to. When you are emotionally attached, you make decisions that are not good for your business, such as sticking with a strategy/product line/project/partnership that isn`t profitable. When you are passionate about your work (but not emotionally attached to something), you do good things, but you don`t make bad decisions that can ruin you.

It`s called business. You have to be able to change course, sell off the business, drop a product line, or buy out a partner. You gotta do what you gotta do to be successful!

Nueveolution and pkamm, you`re reading my posts, but you obviously aren`t comprehending what I`m saying.

Therefore, let`s just agree to disagree.

I`m cool with that.

In either case, I`m through with this thread.

So long, DKing. Regardless of who is misunderstanding who here, it`s clear that you`ve chosen a good time to be through with this thread. No use continuing on when you`re not really adding anything constructive.

Regarding passion in business, I think there are far too few business owners who engage in business ventures because their passion drives them to do so, and far too many who do so for the money alone.

I say we bring passion back into the formula for successful business ventures! As Joseph Campbell would say, "Follow your bliss."

I am really confused about the twist that this thread has taken. The forum is for critiques of the site. As in "tell me what my site looks like from the perspective of an unknown internet surfer...". That information is invaluable! Anyone here in any other forum on SUN can offer you support on your trials in creating this business and how long it took to do the design. But this particular forum is for getting the objective feedback for the rest of the world that doesn`t already know and love you. I didn`t see anyone say they don`t like you or your product offering. The comments were about the site. I am in the midst of this myself on my own thread so I feel you on the "ouch that stings" but wouldn`t you rather hear what other SEE on your sight vs what you MEANT for them to see?

On the site...

My background is in "safety and security" to a degree. I would like to see something that tells me that you personally know the industry. Maybe a stat or two on crime and an about us page that makes it look less affiliate and more organic. I guess I would like to see you engage me more. I agree the colors are hard on the eyes but I see where you were going. You seem to have a good variety of products but it looks like a lot of products on the home page and it is a little overwhelming. Can you maybe stream a news feed somewhere?

I think the problem is that they didn`t say "don`t be passionate about providing safety products to the masses" they said "I think you need to work on the design of the site".

Now if you are a professional designer, selling design services on your site, you may be more emotional about the feedback because it questions your ability in your core business. But if you sell products and you happened to design your own site, you can`t let your pride prevent you from acheiving your goal which is to engage people to buy your site products.

Netmom,

Perhaps you missed DKing`s earlier quote:

Thinking with your heart and not with your head is NEVER a good idea in business or in life.

Dale King

It`s brash statements like this one that strike me as shortsighted. If you look at my earlier postings, you see that I`m not advocating for running a business on emotions alone. In fact, I advocate for a balance, as I`ve said. But I think business folk sometimes put too much value in logic and reason, and too little value on the passion that drives one to engage in a venture.

Having your own site critiqued here is valuable and a great service. And folks should be prepared for hearing some things that they may not want to hear. The person having their site critiqued should stop and realize that even if they don`t like or agree with the critique, the person offering the critique took the time to look at the site and made the effort to analyze it. But, as critics, we should also realize that many of these folks have put their blood, sweat and tears into the project. They ARE emotionally attached to it because it`s their passion. I think it`s wise to keep this in mind when thinking about the content and tone of a criticism, and mis-guided to suggest instead that they not be passionate about it.

I`m not saying give up honesty for sugar-coating. It`s the truly honest observations which are most valuable. But some tact and understanding is always a good idea.

I dunno Pkamm... I re-read the thread and I truly don`t see where the leap was made that they said don`t be passionate about the business. I read over and over that you can`t be emotionally attached to the SITE. I actually agree you on most of what you said but I also agree with Dking in the quote you referenced. As a matter of fact the ONLY emotion to bring to your business should be passion. Not the one that says you are mean because you didn`t say nice things about my site and I worked really, really hard on it. They only said the site in its current design didn`t work for them and here is why. What else should have been said? They also gave good suggestions on what to do to fix it. That is invaluable. Would it have been more palletable if he said "thinking with ONLY your heart and not with your head...". I guess I don`t get the alination of the people you asked for help when you sell products, not site design services.  It is not reasonable to expect the strangers you engage on a site that voluntarily give their time to review pages of a site to be a pep squad too. There are other forums on the board for that. Here I would think you post a request because you want facts about your site which is what he got.

Not trying to be mean but IMO the time for tact would have been a private message lamenting about the change in SUN if that is what you believe, not posting it on the thread as if to bite the hand that fed you...
