Nikole, you beat me to the punch, but I second everything you said.

That is dead-on the truth.

nhgnikole,

It was not meant as an insult, and I`m so sorry that you are so sensitive. I was just stating an opinion from what I have seen on this site and your last post proves my point. I can handle constructive opinions on  my site, advise and ideas, but maybe I am just reading to much into the posts and taking them to personally. I put alot of work into that site and to come on here and hear nothing good about it, yea...I`m going to take it personally. Why don`t go take a look at some of the other sites that are selling the same items as I am and compare the 2 sites. Most of the other sites my 9 year old daughter could have designed and I was going for a professional looking site(and I know it still needs some tweaks)
It is a work in progress and will be for some time.....But I am very proud of it.

I have a piece of paper on the wall in my office. It says

DON`T GET EMOTIONALLY
ATTACHED TO THE PROJECT

It`s a good thing for me to always keep in mind.
Emotional attachment clouds my overall vision.

That quote can only apply to a developer NIKOLE, but when it`s your own business, then you have to look at it from a different perspective.
As a matter a fact when it`s your own business it should read " 100% emotionally attached to my Business, Because it`s mine".....

I totally disagree, Nuevolution.

Nikole`s quote applies to EVERY business owner.

If you don`t have the ability to step back and detach yourself from your emotions and look at your business objectively, you will make poor, emotional business decisions as opposed to smart, sensible business decisions, and that could spell the difference between success or failure.

Thinking with your heart and not with your head is NEVER a good idea in business or in life.

Well, my opinion lies somewhere in-between.

I think the best businesses are run by folks who are passionate about what they do. There`s a lot of emotion in being passionate. But, on the other hand, if you made every decision based on emotion, you would likely be misguided by your own blind spots.

When the project is your own, and you care about it, you cannot help but have some emotional attachment. But it`s probably wise to temper that with some objective, logical thinking once in a while.

There are hundreds of success stories based on a passionate owner/leader who went against conventional wisdom and pursued what looked like a silly, foolish dream.

pkamm, you`re comparing apples and oranges.

Passion is not what Nikole and I were referring to at all.

Be that as it may, I will still make my case for objectivity and sensibility, using your passion argument as an example.

Yes, you should be passionate about your business, but you still need to be able to corral that passion, by stepping back and looking at your business objectively...sensibly.

The success stories you referred to all had the ability  to do that.

How do I know?

Because they wouldn`t be success stories, if they hadn`t.

I don`t care how passionate you are, if you make foolish, emotional business decisions, you are going to FAIL!

Passion combined with sensible objectivity is the key.

Dking,

A quick trip to the dictionary will reveal to you that passion IS emotion. So, I`m not sure where your apples and oranges are coming from.

Otherwise, I think you pretty much parroted what I wrote. Balance is critical.

But statements like nikole`s "Don`t get emotionally attached to the project" reveal a certain lack of understanding about human nature. And my point is that being emotionally involved is not necessarily a bad thing, and in some cases can be the driving force behind some very unconventional but successful ventures.

Dking,
Nope, I don`t even buy that.... Dking, owning a business is like being in a relationship. (I said the word relationship, is that OK? can I say that? NIKOLE did I offend you?)
You need to know when to switch gears... on a heart beat.... and yes you do have to be emotionally attached to your business its called "PASSION" for your business. Just how you implied that you won`t succeed if you are emotionally attached to your business.... The way I look at it is, you won`t succeed if you don`t have the passion, the emotional attachment, the drive... This is what makes you a business owner..
