I dropped by a local pet boutique today and chatted with the owner.  This resulted in me showing her some of my samples that I just `happened` to have in my car. (How I just happen to have 8 pet beds in my car is beyond me) ANYHOW she purchased 3 and ordered 4 more of a larger size.

So here`s the question.  This store is pretty much the only one of its type around here.  I`m sure theres more stores in near by towns but do I cart around 20 pet beds and go door to door?

Also... anyone have any grand ideas of other types of stores that would be interested in carrying my beds?

by the way, I make dog beds out of "designer" fabrics. really popular, but not enough retailers.

Yes.

And when you can`t fit enough in the car, buy a van. Then drive around the state. Meanwhile, continue to build an ecommerce Web site to supplement the driving.

Remember the term: Sales Rep.

Yep, you start out by visiting the stores and establishing a face-to-face relationship with the owners.  It would be a good idea to call ahead and make sure the owner will be there, especially if you are driving a longer distance.

Craig is right, build up a good website.  Start establishing a brand and a presence.  Create a name and a logo.  Have business cards to hand out.

Here`s an idea to get some customer feedback as well.  Maybe attach a short survey with a place for comments in the form of a (postage paid) postcard to each bed.  Use a safety pin and string (cheap) to attach it.  This would be a good way to get consumer testimonials, especially since your customers are actually stores, not the pet owners who buy the beds.  With a handmade, designer product like yours, testimonials can do a lot for your business.

Business Week reported a few months ago that the pet industry is $41 billion and growing strong!  Projections were that it will top $50 billion next year.

BTW - don`t make the mistake many pet product
business owners make.  Resist the temptation to
be "cute" or "clever" with  your business name.

It`s alright but it sounds like a name for chew toys or edible chews for dogs, not designer beds.

Throw them in your car and take off. You will make tons of contacts and if you don`t sell any to the stores right away, at least you made the contact and they will remember you. Pass out business cards or flyers with your information and your bed information.

You have nothing to lose by doing this.

Also put ads in your local newspapers, etc....Flyers up at community centers promoting your beds, etc....

Good Luck
