I am putting together a business plan for my online start up. I need to get an idea of what it will take to build my website. I will need a site where people can build simple profiles, leave reviews on others profiles, search profiles, and join and pay via credit card.. I will also need to have a submission form where people can submit information for payment several times a day for me to work with, forward to people, confirm and submit into a payment system. I will also have to have a database of searchable documents for profile users to use. I want the page to have advanced SEO. My strengths are in the business/marketing side of things and not in the technical. Is this something that I should hire a web company to build and maintain or is it something that I will need to hire a staff for, and if so what kind of staff would I need? What kinds of companies build this complex type of website? Any ideas on the cost involved? Thank you for your help! -Liz

If you want to look for simpler website building solutions, platforms such as Weebly and Jimdo are good alternatives.  No doubt, they will be inferior to completely customized solutions but they are an excellent alternative if you are tight on a budget to start up.  They both have a free platform but you can upgrade to a paid platform which provides you with more powerful tools and e-commerce interface for the case of Jimdo.  You can assess them quickly in this website builder review site which provides detailed comments on Weebly review and Jimdo review

Good luck on your search!

Yes, you need a big website development company to be able to finish that yourself. Plus, a dedicated hosting to host your upcoming social networking website.

you must also be concerned as to how privacy is being dealt with the idea you have.

I can't speak of any development companies or their subsequent costs, but I can recommend that you look into a content management system (CMS) to run your site. The thing is, if you can find a suitable content management system, you can just hire someone to manager the content system itself, and someone to do the actual design of your site.

The real risk of presenting such a business plan/website need to a "large company" is that they may talk you into "what you need is a custom content management system" spiel. They have a point, but if they suggest to build a custom content management system, they may be "tricking" you into something that isn't entirely necessary.

There are many CMSs available both free and paid that should be able to support at least some of the functionality you need, for the free options, any functionality you need should easily implemented via custom modules. I use Drupal, a powerful open-source CMS, it's free too with a very large user community. That's just one option, another free option is Joomla. Most CMSs also support e-commerce too.

If I were you Liz I'd do some research into CMSs. The more educated you are on your options, the less chance you have of getting played by companies who want to capitalize on your inexperience.

Good luck.

best to just go with a CMS....then once you get proof of concept/revenue, invest into building something custom..using an offshore company is also an option, but it's really a hit and miss...even with well reviewed companies
